So I got me a 2006 Expy with the Stock Nav unit, steering wheel controls, rear seat controls, 6 disk changer in the console, and the sub woofer (I DO NOT have the DVD option). So of course Crutchfield and all that say nothing works in these trucks so I am just curious as to everyone’s experiences? If they have any? And what did you swap your unit out with.

I would like to retain the steering wheel controls, and sub woofer, I am fine getting rid of the CD changer, and crappy Nav.

This is what I am thinking about installing.

and to use the steering wheel buttons this

Steering Wheel Adapter Interface

So here is some photos as everyone Loves Photos! The stock deck and as far as I can tell what the plugs on the back do - any experts want to elaborate further? Please by all means - I'd love the pin outs for every plug if I could - hint hint

My understanding is that Visteon used Alpine changers in these trucks and one might assume... not sure however that with some wiring modification one could hook up the changer to another deck - I wonder if the data bus is the same for all changers? But as far as the changer 1 MP3 data CD will contain more music than the entire changer so I really do not care about it - not to mention an IPod or other MP3 player. Actually it will give me more storage in the console!

I replaced my standard 6-cd unit in my 06 with a Kenwood double din and used the pac swi. The wire kit came with sub conversion so I can control the sub separately from the head unit (remember to put resistors on the amp turn on wires to alleviate pop). Not sure if my rear controls do anything now - never tried them. Someone on one of these forums suggested this to retain the controls http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_22808_Axxess+ASWC.html. i would probably try it instead of the PAC. Mine was defective from the begining and their tech support told me how to fix it (very helpful) but it still works sometimes - at best. Many others here and on f150 forums have used the pac-swi and opinions vary - I am not happy with mine, but complacent until the deck gets pulled again. I had no problems at all with space for the head unit. Good luck, Mike.

In your picture, the black plug (C290b) on the back of the radio is for parking aid signal, audio/climate control switch, dvd player, speed sensor and audio protocols it is not for the subwoofer. The light green plug (C2188d) next to it is for the subwoofer, rear audio control and audio protocols.

Thats interesting CorvetteJ cause when I unplugged that black plug my sub woofer quit working - that might be because of the audio protocols however, interesting more research will be required! Never thought of the back-up sensors, I DO NOT want to loose those puppies, the wife loves them! And can you elaborate on just what is meant by the "audio/climate control switch"?

All I am trying to achieve is somehow getting a HARD WIRED audio input to this stereo, I would think it is somehow possible but it's beyond me at the moment. Suggestions? Adapters? Audio Engineers? LOL

Learned one thing new - if you hold down the 3 and 6 preset buttons at the same time you go into a test mode.

Sorry, thevalleyboy, I gave you the wiring for an 03 expy, I got mix up after looking at your pictures, I thought they only put that model navigation unit in 03 and 04 model and then change it out for the model I put in my 03 which is the new model. Oh, by the way, thanks for the measurement of your radio, that gave some needed info that I had been looking and asking for but never received any reply. So you are probadly right because Ford changes their wiring and colorcoding every few years.

The depth of the radio from the back to the front is 7 1/4", all of your other measurement match and I don't think you can put a line out/in on the older model navigation. On the new model that I install, the programmer ask and I told him to install it. Look at the picture and you can see the tabs at the top with what is programmed in the radio ie, AM, FM,CD, DVD, SR, Line-In. The SR is for satellite radio, hopefully I can get that install today as soon as the rain stop and the UPS man get here. I had to buy a new sirius module to go with the new nav unit because it doesn't work with the old visteon unit.

I found this

3 Input Adapter

Anyone happened to install one of these or is interested in giving it a go before I try to order on from the US, deal with Customs, and all that. By the time it hits my door it will be 3 months and an extra $100 for shipping, customs, and brokerage.

I don't really like the "wired remote" however, to bad it cannot do it automatically, I guess thats out because it will still be receiving a signal from the CD changer. I guess a guy could always just intercept the outputs from the changer and by some parts from Radio Shack (or similar) with a 2 position selector to either input the aux. or changer to the stereo. Hum, I might just have to find me a Radio Shack..

Something like what this guy built and only have a small switch accesable somewhere, maybe even in the console.
3 input to 1 output

Does anyone happen to know if the rear park assist beeper keeps working after an aftermarket head unit install or does that feature disappear? To be honest I have not even gone looking if it still beeps without the stereo... I guess I should have done that when I pulled it out the first time... so that means stay tuned - cause I'll remove it again to find out.

So I am going to try to pick up a 4PDT switch this weekend and wire it inline to the stock CD Changer input to the stereo - what this does will give me an AUX input with the stock deck as long as CD's are present in the changer - basically all I will be doing is hijacking the outputs (left and right) of the changer when the switch is on, and diverting it to the AUX input - I'll take photo's and report if I am succeed - which I am about 99.9% sure of. I might install USB ports in the rear audio plate for the kids to charge MP3 players also... I'll take photo's and document for those interested.

So I picked up the switch, 1/8" stereo jack, 4 conductor wire, today so I hope to get some photo's of the stuff, the wiring diagrams, how to's - or how I did them online this weekend - I am hoping to find some time tonight after the kiddies go to bed.
