Had a new fuel pump installed about 4 months ago. Also installed new fuel filter (what a screwy place to put that filter!) Anyway, car starts then immediately quits. Starts again then quits. Starts again, then quits. Have swapped relays. Have checked fuse. Also disconnected + battery and grounded to reset computer. Haven't a clue as to where to go from here. What bugs me is that I have done this any number of times. It's like it's not getting any gas, but if the fuel pump is bad, why does the car keep starting. One would think there'd come a point when it wouldn't start due to lack of gas in the line. TIA

My Nissan versa would start and run for a bit and then die. After a few tries it would stay running. Eventually after a month or so, it would only just barely fire but not start. Fuel pump replaced and not having anymore problems.

I can't speak to the Expy, but some vehicles have 2 and even 3 fuel pumps. Is it possible your tank fiuel pump has failed (again) and another pump is drawing some fuel but not enough to keep it running?

That's what I assumed with the versa.

When you start the vehicle, can you keep the engine running by immediately pushing the accelerator pedal?

If so, I would suggest cleaning the inside the throttle body bore.

Nice call 99! I have been looking at both throttle body and idle air control valve as the suspects. This start, then 2 sec. stop is driving me nuts! Plus I can't move the dang car! Appreciate the help! :) OH! And having trouble finding a IDC valve as well! Can't aford the dealer and nobody else seems to have one! STUMPED! :)

Cannot keep engine running by hitting accelerator. Starts, runs 2 seconds, then stops. But I will add that it starts really good! LOL!

If you are going to work on newer cars you really need one. They are not very expensive, or I wouldn't have one ;) That is how I found my fuel filter was partially blocked.

Do any of these help?
Symptoms sound exactly like a stuck IAC valve.

Sounds like my TJ. Always needs to be cleaned. I didn’t realize the expedition had them as well. Learn something every day.

I'll tell ya what it is the starting and then stopping is it running off the fuel from the initial prime. It's either the fuel control module or you have a broken wire and the fuel pump isn't communicating with the pcm

Makes sense, fuel pressure gauge would help in the diagnosis.

FOUND THE PROBLEM! All by myself, I might add.... LOL! A couple of months back I paid the piper $1000 to have new plugs, coils, plugs and wires installed in my 2007 Expedition. And you all know that my car has been starting right up and then dying after 2 seconds. What was the problem?

Well, evidently these high priced mechanics did not get the rubber boot connecting the air cleaner system to the throttle body on correctly. So, the entire boot along with the hose clamp fell away from the throttle body and left me sucking air.... but not through the relevant sensors that would keep the car running! So NOW ya know! Thank you all for leading me in the right direction. While not perfect you all came damned close! :D

Between the throttle body and MAF sensor I'd venture to say they were spot on!
