2008 Engine Replacement

Just pulled my valve covers expecting to replace the cam phasers only to find out I lost a cam follower.

The terrible noise started on Wednesday and while it seemed worse than expected I had no idea how much damage occurred until I pulled the covers today after overnighting all the parts in so I could fix it this weekend.

With the follower gone, the valve is no sticking out. I assume if the valve bounced around the cylinder that the changes of economically repairing this engine is nil.

I can get a reman engine from National Parts Distributors for $3200 shipped to my house. This has the updated OEM phasers and they ported the oil so they can do a higher pressure/volume oil pump. I have a neighbor that is a mechanic at a local GM dealership that will install it for $750. Anyone have better suggestions?

Anything else I should replace at the same time? I noticed my passenger side exhaust manifold has a slight leak so I will replace that as well, but since it will be out of the engine I am open to further suggestions!!

Anyone need some new phasers, solenoids and gaskets?!?

Replacement of other items will depend on the mileage on the vehicle. The least would be pump seal on the tranny, possibly a reman torque converter.

Flush the cooling system of course and add new coolant, clean the snot out of the engine bay while the motor is out, inspect the motor mounts etc.

111,000 miles

Everything else is great. Had zero complaints before my wife came home and said the engine is crazy loud. Thought it was just the phasers and told her to drive it until they get here. She maid it about a block the next morning before it was undriveable.

How did you chose that company for a reman engine?

Have you done your due diligence on the company?

Do they do the work in house or do they throw used parts in an engine and call it a reman?

What is the warranty?

How does the cost compare to a Ford crate motor with a 3 year warranty?

Basically do they know what they are doing?

I don't have any affiliation with any company, but I always do my homework first.

Right now looking at Promar. Looks like mostly good reviews with the exception of some of the Lightning engines. It is really hard to find a company that everyone has had perfect success with.

The crate motor from Ford would be around $2100 more. If it was a new engine I would consider the difference, but since that is just a reman from the lowest bidder, not sure if the value is there.

I would LOVE someone to help pick the right company. I spent all weekend searching and this is what I came up with. But since this is my first engine replacement I would welcome any and all advice.

I would love to have the lightning engine in my truck...is ford making those crate with the SC?
