So my 2010 Expedition is dead. After only 117K this is what the front control arms look like. (below) Then the cam phaser died.

On top of
* Seat heater died
* Cam phaser died
* GIANT rust holes in the rockers
* Peeling paint on all aluminum panels

I must be a glutton for punishment because I ordered a 2023 SPP in October.
Here's hoping the new one fares better

That is a testament to your safe driving.
Looking like that, if i was driving it would have only lasted till the first curve.

Should have listened to the squeamish warning,
i am now going to have to look under any vehicle i drive from now on.

Looks like it has been in the ocean.

Never touched salt water. I bought it new and I don't have a boat.

I blame the salt spray on the roads. That stuff sticks. After a snow drive I get to the car wash on the first dry day and get the undercarriage wash. Still, if I wash it again later that white spray still comes out.

I'm originally from MA. Plowed snow for years. Ran trucks on the beach and got them a little wet at times. Never saw damage that bad. Mine were washed regularly to include the under carriage though.

That's what kills me. Whenever I ended up driving through salty slush on the roads I would get the car washed (car wash with undercarriage sprayers) as soon as the roads were dry enough.

Do you have a heated garage? I don't, and I live in salt country too, but I have heard that heated garages let the ice melt and the salt does more damage than leaving stuff outside and frozen. Not a proven theory by me, but kind of makes sense. Yours is worse than I've ever seen. Aren't they replaceable parts if surrounding members are still pretty good?

I live in a snow/salt state, park in a heated garage, and neither of my Expeditions or any other vehicle has rusted anywhere remotely close to that point. That is unreal.

Almost all car washes recycle most if not all of their water. I was told the one near me has a settling tank for sediment and the salinity is reduced by mixing fresh water with the recycled stuff. I suppose there may be some with RO filtration systems but that's got to cost a fortune and creates a ton of waste water.
I can't imagine high pressure spraying of a high salinity water to the undercarriage being a good idea.

This is why I wash my undercarriage as soon as soon as possible after traveling through road salted roads.

Preventive maintenance is the best maintenance. Heck, my pups go to the vet for an annual checkup. And 'cuz I'm in Virginia my cars get a mandatory annual safety inspection which "probably" will spot something like this before it reaches the crush state. Yeah I can change the oil for less than 50% what what the dealer wants but even in Ohio I let the dealer do it every year.

I got new tires and an alignment less than 2 years ago. They were all up under the truck and never said a word.

Never going to a Town Fair Tire again, I can tell you that.

Spray your undercarriage with wool wax every year or every other year and it can help avoid issues like that.
