I got a 15,000 miles Armada as a rental while my '17 is in the truck hospital so of course, I've got to compare the two. Now that I've driving it 150 miles or so, I'll post my impressions.

Hat's off to Enterprise for not sticking me with a pos Santa Fe again! The armada is nicely optioned and at 68K, it's a dead match for my own trucks list price.

The interior is very nice w/ high quality leather throughout. The dash is filled with two large analog gauges, Speed/Tach which are surrounded by 4 additional smaller analog coolant(H-L), Fuel, Oil(temp or pressure?) and battery voltage. Between the two large gauges sits a 2x3"ish LCD display, rather cheap & similar to that found on a stopwatch which you can cycle through range, mileage etc using a button on the "ear" of the dash....and there are buttons, a ton of them in the center section under the 5x7(WAG) display. Yet some are useless such as the heated/cooled seats. You can't see them in the dark.

For a 68K truck the tech is decidedly OLD appearing yet it apparently(I haven't read the manual) is has some type of lane sensors and adaptive CC?

One very nice feature is the blind spot indicator...it's inside the cab at the mirror location but in use, it's SO much easier to use because the left side falls into your natural peripheral vision!

OK, on to driving. First, I did not nor will I google to see the specs on the truck or engine....I know it's a v8 and I'm guessing by the 6K redline and very low 1st gear, that it's a bit oversquare and likes to rev. The engine is lively for a V8 expressingly it's willingness to rev when as JE puts it, I stomp on it. LOL It's pickup is impressive and it does so with the same amount of "drama" as my expy does. The engine is not a silent partner but it does loaf along at 60 at a hair over 1200rpm so it's torque is impressive as well. Nissan apparently wanted a very reactive engine so the kickdown is very close to the throttle setting....nearly any requests made to the engine while cruising result in a downshift, sometimes a bit harsh but I'm nitpicking there.

The steering is light, VERY light. It's like I'm driving a B210, not a 3 ton truck...speaking of weight. I don't know the actual weight of the Armada but I guess it to be 1000-1400lbs lighter than my Expy. It's just how it feels on the road. The suspension is very different and while it rode very nicely on smoother highways, it def feels as if there is much more "action" going on under the truck while you drive it, as if the wheels are moving much more so than in my expy.

The brakes are excellent but they also feel "remote", which is the general feeling I get while driving it...."remote"......the suspension and brakes both feel "remote". I don't know else to describe it.

I'll wrap up with this; Some of you guys know I used to road race bikes. Like all riders, I've "got a corner" that I've spent years right/driving and I can generally wring out a car or bike or even my expy on that corner. It's a 270 degree exit from one highway to another, meaning I can drive it as fast as I can wrangle it through if I choose. My SLK with ultra-high performance tires will "do" that exit at 80mph without a sound from the tires and it feels like a Hot Wheels car. My Expy will break loose right around 50-52 and will slide through but it's a easily controlled slide because there is so much connection between road/driver.

This is where the Armada failed badly. It's super sensitive, light steering is also setup to greatly oversteer. The suspension does not connect well with the driver....pushing barely 42mph upset the Armada to the point where pushing it would have been foolish. On straight smooth roads, it's tough to beat the ride if you don't mind being a spectator but if it's gets rough or twisty, I think you'll be happier in your expy.

Mostly sounds like what the critics say about it. I test drove one a cpl years back and can its a nice truck. I feel its a bit antiquated interior wise. Its a bit confining, tech feels old and limited(though its feature heavy). I echo the quality, its up there with some luxury vehicles. As far as driving, i didnt get to take it on any bad roads, its very airy on the road without feeling floaty, which i liked. I got the feeling from your review the airyness disspates quickly on rough roads. Weird because edmunds rated its ride a 9 out of 10, but my expy a 7(they tested a ccd equipped modelwhich mines doesnt have, but even the nav got a 7.5) It felt very well put together as well. I didnt like the steering too much, light and vague. Very quiet as well. At the time i felt it was nice and now for the price its even nicer. Wouldnt buy one over my expy(or for my nav at the time)...

I test drove one before purchasing my 2017 Expedition EL. I didn't care for it. It felt like a boat, sluggish and disconnected. And I needed a 3rd row with both room and cargo. Only the Expedition EL had everything.

Nice write up

I drove it as well before snagging my ‘17 EL - I agree with you assessment. That being said, it seemed more “stout” and probably would have handled the camper better with the ability to engine brake as well as what (in my opinion) felt more “girthy”

But that’s just speculation.

Love the Expy.

DL had been doing research on all these lg suv's for a long while before getting his '18 so I appreciate the comments from that knowledge base.

After another 100 miles;

Hey, why do all the large SUV's w/o electronic suspension feel one way when you hit a particular bump today, but when I hit it tomorrow, it will feel differently? All three of my Expy's have done it, leading me to proffer that maybe it's the operator? I did think that at first, but I've heard others say the same thing. This morning was 23F out and that Armada rode like a Country Squire Station Wagon.....those that had one in the family will understand.

The V8 is pretty nice too....It's very powerful and kicks that truck in the butt when you open it up...to the point where you wouldn't do it in traffic cause you'd be embarrassed for being a dick.
It tends to downshift while on cruise control, over-rev then back off hard causing a bit of drama. Of course the downside is that the average mileage, I assume since new since not many are going to bother resetting it in a rental, was 15mpg. Otherwise, that engine is a pleasant reminder of the power of a V8. I don't know the HP rating for it but I'd recon it a close match either way for the 3.5...face it, all these trucks come with pretty nice engines today.

The rearview mirror is crap...I'll bet its field of vision is easily a third less than my Expy and a headrest blocks that! It's really bad and the side mirrors don't help by being taller than wide.

Finish is very nice, a lot nicer than my truck but the tech is old, dated and apparently a pain in the ass to use with it's limited programs and it offers a very deep menuing system, reminiscent of a modern Ducati for those that have had the pleasure.

BTW- it still sucked in "my corner".....but I'm also not going to push THEIR unwieldy truck through MY corner that the state of Maryland so graciously adorned with guardrails & CURBS!

All the young kids here, are googling B210, and Country Squire wagon. Google cars from the late 70's, good road test. Should give Road & Track a call Jeff, you were thinking about a retirement job, write articles.

Oh yeah the Ford Country Squire , Mercury Colony Park, Pontiac Safari,Olds Vista Cruiser, Chevrolet Kingswood..... ok I’ll stop..... the original family haulers that came mostly with big block 4v V8’s and towing gears! You had to watch out for the big wagons back in the day,a lot of them could spank you from light to light! They also got superb traction out of the hole.... just saying!

Did you guys watch that Fast and loud show where they put a screaming motor in the Chevy Kingswood wagon for the charity ugly kids. Burnout special, with like 500 horse's.

I drove an EL rental from Chicago to Fl and back last year. I drove an Armada all over Fl last year too.

The Armada felt like a rocket ship was very smooth and light to steer. Excellent ride quality w no rattles. Loved it.

The EL felt more like a boat. Less agile obviously due to length but got good gas mileage out of the v6. It had good acceleration but definitely had turbo lag. The braking wasn’t as good as the Armada but it is a bigger truck.

All in all I don’t think these two trucks are aimed at the same buyer. Very different characteristics and appearance.

For me a truck w V8 is more desirable than a forced aspirated v6 in a truck platform. Yes, gas mileage is more on v6 but fuel economy is not the main attribute in any truck.

I think each type of expy has a different tune. My fam rented a 15 expy el xlt and it had a floaty wafty ride. It was somewhat u gainly but its highway ride was fantastic. Later i test drove a 15 expy el limited with 20in wheels and it felt drastically different. It had a more planted ride, firm bit absorbent and much more agile. It felt sportier than the xlt. This is probably more to do with wheel size, but i think ford tunes xlts slightly softer than ltds and i preferred that set up. Later drove a ccd equipped model 17, non el and it had the floaty xlt ride but the agility of the ltd. In my opinion, the ccd equipped models had a better ride quality than the armada, but not by much. My current 18 def has a firmer ride than the armada but i bet it could drive circles around one. The 18 ccd rides (esp nav) def rides better but i havent driven an armada recentlt enough to change my perspective.
