2019 Totaled-looking at 2020 Platinum

Hey All,
My wife was in a terrible accident and totaled our 2019 expedition max. It rolled 3-5 times, I guess its hard to count as you are rolling...

Anyway, we need a max with max tow and there are very few of those out there. I think there are about 100 expeditions for sale in my area and less than 10 have max tow. Anyway, we think we found a 2020 Platinum with tow that we are going to look at. It has pretty low miles (23k). Were there still a lot of cam phaser issues with the 2020? Anything else to look out for? We had the xlt with tow and not really any other features. It did have the cam phaser tick at start up and the standard leaking shocks but otherwise I loved it. We looked at the newer suburban/yukon xl but I just can't get on board with it and also they seem to be a little hard to find with the tow package.

I will post some pics of the wrecked max later. Kind of want the insurance to do their thing first. I will say I feel like the expedition is extremely safe, my wife and daughter were totally okay. The side curtain air bags seem to do their job.

Thank goodness your family is ok. I remember a kid from Georgia football program and his friend were in an expy when they crashed after the game. Im sure foul/unsafe play was involved when they described how the accident occurred, but sad loss of life there.

I believe the cam phasers design was changed starting either 2020 or 2021, I can't remember for sure. I still think people get the rattle, but it could also be the tuebo wastegate which is common, but easy fix. You will def feel the comfort difference from xlt to platinum as well. I went nav instead of expy and actually pretty glad I did.

We just purchased a 19 CPO Platinum Max with Max tow. 28k miles. Cam phasers could theoretically be an issue all the way through part of 2021 I believe, I'd just buy the lowest mileage one you can find, buy an extended warranty from Harold Zeigler Ford online, and enjoy it. FWIW our 19 had the cam phaser re-flash at 8k miles and does not have cam phaser noise yet......someday it might, we'll cross that road when we get to it. Just traded a 2022 Suburban in on this as it had HORRIBLE visibility and blind spots. Glad your wife was safe in the accident!

There wasn't another car. They hit some black ice, HP believes that wind had blown some snow over the road which had melted then froze. For some reason when they hit the ice it slid sideways and then when it hit the dirt median sideways it started to roll. They were probably doing at least 80mph. (Speed limit in this area is 80mph). I had talked to her about five minutes before the accident and she had told me the roads were clear and it was sunny and they were making good time, little traffic.

The rear view mirror was still attached by cables but is on the roof of the car.

Wow, that's pretty terrible. I'm glad everyone was okay, i'm sure quite shaken up but to be honesty, that's in a lot better shape then I would have expected for rolling 3-5 times. Gives me a little hope, as i've always been a bit worried about the weight of these and the aluminum body. I can't quite tell but did you have the moonroof, given the XLT I don't believe so, I wonder if that helped in your case by adding a little more rigidity up there. When I think 3-5 rolls in these, I'm usually thinking of extrication.

No sun roof in it, which I agree probably helped. I still honestly am shocked they are okay. I need to find the pictures of the drivers side, it looked almost untouched. No glass broke on the driver side.

The mirror and side step on the driver side are gone but the driver side was pretty untouched.

You mention max tow package. One thing to consider and the reason I went with an XLT Max is payload. Payload on my 2022 XLT Max with panoramic is 1,780. Most Platinums we looked at had 1,300-1,500 payload. Pulling close to max tow will put your hitch weight at 900lbs. That leaves a Platinum with only 400-500 lbs. payload for occupants and gear. A loaded up XLT will give you another 300ish lbs. I had a 2019 Explorer Platinum, and a 2019 F150 Limited. It comes down to function over form.
XLT Pros: good luxury, great payload, save about 15K
XLT Con’s:
No blue cruise (do I really need this)
No intermittent wipers (whatever)
No PwR running boards (I don’t miss these)
No 15.5” screen (I’ve heard it reacts slowly) the 12” is still great
No pillow embossed leather (not a replacement for 300 needed lbs of payload.
Less HP & torque. I haven’t noticed the difference going from my F150 with the 400hp engine.

Unfortunately, trying to find an xlt (or any expedition) with the max tow is like finding a needle in a haystack. There were 120 expeditions listed in our area and 5 had the tow package. We couldn't wait months for an order and none of the local dealers said they could find a new one for us. Luckily, we don't tow near max. Our trailer is about 6500lbs loaded and we have no plans to go with a bigger trailer and may actually move to one that is a little lighter. I really did like our XLT and don't feel like I need any of the fancy stuff on the other models but I will be honest, it was about 30deg when we test drove the 2020 platinum and that was the first time I had driven something with a heated steering wheel and it was kind of nice. We definitely don't have plans to roll another vehicle but the wife likes the extra safety features the nicer models have. I still drive an old jeep that has seat belts...
I will have to check what the payload is on the platinum.

I'm assuming even an XLT gets all the airbags as the Platinum but I never compared that.... I'm sure after an event like this, safety is on top of the list.

I believe this is the case in the newer models. The 2018 and 2019 had some differences from what I am seeing. In 2020 they made the safety stuff standard across the models.

Glad to know everyone was safe. That type of accident is the reason I drive a full sized body on frame SUV.

WOW!! First and foremost, thank the Lord everyone is ok! Secondly, I think that truck is in pretty good shape for rolling multiple times. I'm amazed how good it looks overall. Says good things about these vehicles.

I can't even begin to say how blessed we feel. My daughter literally walked away without a scratch, which I think is nothing short of a miracle. My wife is doing well, the big bump to the head has turned into massive black eyes but she is doing pretty good. She has an appointment with a physical therapist to look at a stiff neck and hip but both of those are pretty minor. The CT and xrays all came back perfect.

We picked up the 2020 Platinum. It only has 23k miles which is pretty low for nearly 3 years old. It still has a month left of the factory 3yr/36000, I am wondering if looking into an extended warranty makes sense. I guess I will see what pricing looks like on those. The original owner took great care of it, its in seriously like new condition.

It snowed this morning, the stock hankooks suck in the snow. There are a lot of ford 18" wheels for sale in my area so I may pick up a set and have tires that match our lifestyle better for 3/4 of the year and put some snow tires on the 22's for winters.

I drive a jeep everyday that has almost zero creature comforts so the old xlt was pretty nice to me but these Platinums are freaking nice.

Absolutely YES on the Extended Warranty. Harold Zeigler in Michigan (google them) just sold me a warranty for my 2019 with 28k miles. It was about $2k for a 100k Platinum Warranty with $100 ded. One major repair and it pays for itself. MY previous Expedition (a bit of a lemon 2018 with 75k miles) had over $12k in warranty repairs, so the warranty on that one paid for itself too

I also found out last week that the Hankooks suck........I put a set of Michelin Defender LTX M/S on the stock 22" wheels for our 3,000 mile trip tomorrow (from Michigan to Florida and back for Spring Break)........I have a set of 18" F150 takeoffs that I'll run my Blizzak snows on for next winter.
