New member, just joined. Been lurking for some time.

2019 Limited 4x4 with 119K Miles. Transmission having harsh downshift and upshifts mid range ( 4-6 gears). Yesterday while in 5th barely accelerating, it reeved and shifted hard it startled me. Did it again today in 3-4th gear. One time, put it in drive but wouldn't move. Like it was still in Park. Put it back in Park and back in drive, no issue.

Clunks when putting in drive and park some. Trying to find out how long people have gone this way? Doesn't happen all the time, most time drives normally, but does occur. I know what fate awaits, just curious how long people think I get by? Has anyone done anything successfully to prolong things?

Unsure of service history, just purchased in May of 2024. Just did rear evap core, had leak and only had 7oz of refrigerant.

Thanks for all of the help. This form seems full of great information!

I would have the transmission scanned for any stored trouble codes by a reputable transmission shop or your Ford dealer. This may give you an idea how long before the transmission fails and you are stranded.

If it hasn't been rebuilt yet, then it has the older problematic CDF drum. Not good.

My 2020 had (has?) the same issues you described and just got it back from Ford after a CDF drum replacement. Ford had previously rebuilt the valve bodies and reset the learning module several times to no avail. I've only had it back a week so it might be too soon to say the issue is resolved but I'm hopeful. 71k miles.

Does it shift better cold? Clunking into gear is somewhat normal. Also, a real mechanical failure will hunt for gears as that sleeve that moves, partially blocking fluid. Since it's intermittent, you might want to erase the adaptive learning tables. Mine has 84,000 miles and did most of what you describe, but was fixed by simply resetting the tables. After a week, it still shifts as if it were new. For the cost of the software ($12) and the cable ($55), its worth it to try. If you are out of warranty, go to a highly respected transmission shop in your area as most of them are seeing and fixing this crappy transmission as much as a dealer.

How do you do that??
have to reset the adaptive learning via a scan tool like one from Autel or TOPDON or through Forscan a computer program that works like a scan tool. Will need a forscan approved dongle to connect to the OBD2 port and the computer, if you go the forscan route.

Just had my 2019 FX4 trans replaced with 70,000 miles. Similar issues with mostly hard shifts. Tech reported multiple gear shift sequence issues. Thankfully my drivetrain warranty covered the quote of a ~$9000.00 repair.
