Am I just shifting/driving wrong or is the 10r80 that "questionable"?

IMHO, Ford should have created an average shift program and not let it learn.
My personal findings: I used to clear the TCM learning once approximately every 2 months, or when it gets too laid back. A couple of months ago, I experimented and disabled the TCM learn and the shifting is aggressive, almost like sport mode without the rpm hold. It climbs and downshifts the gears pretty flawless but is a little too aggressive for me on a day-to-day basis. When I let it learn, it goes from almost sport mode to grandma feeling, bad shifting and downshifting, a lot of sliding into gears, etc.

there's an occasional hard shift, but usually it's due to an abnormal condition that has been created by the driver. No transmission is perfect, but I really have no complaints with this one.

Just finished a hard week with camping only being an option for us this year with all sorts of sports overlap that we really couldn’t miss. I rolled off close to 700 miles running back home, with about 150 towing miles.

This was first towing with tsb in place. It’s still shifting the gears as I expect it to, as always. It just finds the proper gear and goes to work. Everything has been perfect in shift feel and initial engagement since the tsb too.

I won’t fully know the outcome until this winter as I only got the super hard shifts when it goes under 40 outside.

For you guys having problems, I’d say you either really do have an internal issue, you might need the tsb done, you might not be running high quality fuel and that is doing some funky stuff to the whole pcm, or maybe you just need to push the truck harder. I don’t mess around on the road and it seems the truck knows how to cope with my use. The week or so it takes to do a relearn is misery with sluggish gear choice as it takes it that long to learn to stay aggressive all the time.

So strange. You say yours gets sluggish? When I erase the TCM data and allow the tranny to relearn, my Ex gets very aggressive with shifting, almost like sport mode. Then after a month or 2 it starts shifting sluggishly, sliding into gears, etc., because of my local laid-back habits.

That’s what happened with the emissions recall update. Got sluggish and it started shifting harsh and slamming into get on engagement. I read the tsb and it said it taught the computer to compensate for wear and that solved it. Created another week of relearn where it was trying to stay in high gears. I tend to whip around slow pokes and get up to speed quickly. Once the pcm learns my habits, it will drop gears perfectly when I gouge on it.

I’m puzzled as to why many people don’t seem to like the trans behavior. This has been the best of any vehicle for me and I’m north of 40 cars and trucks, plus if you count the fleet at our old construction company, it’s way way more than that. I’ve seen a lot of stuff over the years.

I’d be interested if the people that don’t like it have the airplane gears. The 3.73 is the perfect gear for this rig. I tested some expys before I bought and the ones without tow package had the higher gears and those trucks were real pigs taking off. I could see that doing something to how you like the trans, but that’s a bit weird too as it has so many gears I’d tend to think it could find one for all occasions.

Nonetheless, I would absolutely not buy one without the 3.73s. Nope.

I love the tranny too. My problem is the occasional slip and slam when I accelerate.

My tranny temp dropped quite a bit to around 180 after the PCM emissions update. And the reason why you started again is because they usually erase all data in PCM and TCM. So, everything has to be relearned.

I agree, the 3.73 gear is perfect for smooth and faster acceleration. I honestly didn't know before I got my Ex that has the heavy-duty tow package. Once I researched the differences, I was very happy it had that feature.
