Update: after my brand new 2023 Ford Expedition Stealth Edition Dark Matter Gray has been at dealership since 12/11/23, I picked it up today bcuz the running board issue (see my running board thread) is still not resolved and I didn’t want to go another week or two without my $75k+ brand new vehicle.

The rattling in my liftgate was fixed and that fix last about 20 miles into my drive home and came back with a vengeance!!

Back to square 1 on running board and this rattling issue. Dealer has survey that I should receive in a few days and if it’s not a 5-star review they want a call. I cannot wait!!!! I will do that first and then contact Ford corporate bcuz these issues (running boards and liftgate rattle) are QA/QC issues at the factory.

I will also reach out to the new auto group (Asbury Automotive Grouo out of Georgia) that just finalized the purchase of Koons Ford fleet of dealerships where I bought my brand new 2023 Ford Expedition Stealth Edition from. This is a QA/QC on them too for not doing some checks on the vehicle before they stuff it on their lot. And also the terrible communications between me and the Service Advisor assigned to me..

Got to love the Ford quality these days.
Yeah. And the funny part about this is I still have my 2004 XLT with 218k miles on it and don’t shit rattle on it.

I broke down after telling my wife I’m not spending $70k+ on a new Expy bcuz Toyota jacked up the new Grand Highlander. She has a 16 XLE and it’s fine so when they made the new one bigger, i thought cool, not $70k.

Chopped down the 2nd row space to make it Grand. No for me.

So bit the bullet and got the new 23 Expy Limited thinking I’d get same quality for 20 years I got out of my XLT. Wrong! Into dealer with these issues before my first payment which was yesterday….

For $70k+ and a Limited, this truck should be rock solid.

Hello, @roybus14 were you able to find a solution to the rattle near the lift gate? I have a persistent rattle (more like a chatter) which is coming from the rear roof area near the lift gate on a 23 Explorer.

Hey!

It was determined by a 2nd Ford shop that it was an issue with the plastic clips inside the lift-gate were not properly attached and they needed to add spacers. Now the lift-gate is nice and tight and the rattle is gone…

You may want to ask the dealer shop to check that everything is clipped in and tight….

I have an 04 still hanging on so I am an Expy fan which is why we bought this new one.

Ford’s quality has taken a hit over the years….

Purchased new 2023 Limited (11 miles on it) on 11/07/23. Truck is very nice and a great upgrade to my 2004 XLT.

However, the last several days we and passengers have noticed a rattling noise coming from the back/rear.

Sat in the back while wife drove and it sounds like it’s either coming from the rear lift gate or the third row seats or something under the third row or undercarriage.

Some Ford truck owners have said it’s the panoramic roof and others have said it’s in the lift gate. Any ideas and is there a TSB out for this rattling?

Dropping of Thursday night at dealer.
Hello, we have a 2023 Expo Platinum with same rattle, ended up being two things in our vehicle, one was the plastic funnel attached to the metal jack which was loss and rattled around and sounded like the second row seat..... so I put a piece of foam around the funnel and a rubberband to hold in place...that one solved....the other rattle was the rear seatbelt in the roof, plastic on plastic when retracted....put a black hair scrunchie around the seatbelt fastener, fixed that one also. Hope this helps.

These are the areas I can think of that can cause the rattle, not in any order.
Catalytic converter, liftgate, spare tire, items in back well, like the jack, etc., exhaust, brake parts, shocks, seat brackets, anything hanging under the chassis.

I had the lift gate rattle as well. Fixed it by greasing the latch. I noticed none of the latches on our 23 Limited were lubricated so we started picking up chatter from the doors as well. Fine work from the UAW…..

Update..... So Wife and I went to dinner the other night with a group of friends. On the ride back I had her drive and got in the back (2nd row) so that I could hear the rattle. The rattle happened and I was able to put my ear to it.....

It's coming from the lift gate. Mainly where the lift gate is closed. I checked the hook that the lift gate attaches to when its closed and that is not loose. I did notice that for a $75k plus truck with bells and whistles that the lift gate material is cheaply made.

After arriving home I remember being on a MACH forum where an owner mentioned that they had lift gate/trunk problems and that their's was misaligned. I noticed that my lift gate on my 2023 Brand New Limited Stealth Edition is not flush when closed on both sides. So that may be causing the rattling issue.

I have an appointment at Ford Dealership on Monday 12/11 for them to investigate this and fix the rattle. I will update this thread with the outcome.... I'm only just 1000K miles in (purchased with 11 miles on it).....

Great truck except for the rattle and Ford should have made the lift gate of a higher quality....

Regards,
I open and close my roof and it goes away.
