My son got a 3D printer for his birthday earlier this month, so I've been tinkering with it to figure out a way to dock my phone in the spot where the OEM coin holder is located.

I wanted to be able to just drop the phone in and have it link up to the USB port for Android Auto... the little USB-C that I've been using was starting to fail from frequent use.

My current version is only temporary, since it's printed in PLA which won't hold up to the interior temperatures of the Expedition in the summer.

The odd-shaped insert snaps in exactly where the coin-holder insert snaps in.

The insert attaches to the phone dock with sort of a dovetail.

It works great, I did have to buy a right-angle USB-C cable that fits snugly into the dock so that I can just drop my phone in and it plugs in perfectly. I have a spool of black PETG coming that I'm going to reprint it in with a couple tweaks, that should be MUCH more heat-tolerant.

This would sell like crazy on Amazon I’m guessing. I believe the last TWO generations F150’s have the same coin slot if no HD tow package? The new 2021 redesign probably has it as well.

You potentially have millions of customers with the F150 alone!

Etsy or Amazon could make you some big sales here and give your son a nice opportunity to run a little side hustle.

Awesome!! Much more useful than the coin holder. I would buy one in a heart beat for my iPhone 12.

I am waiting on a spool of PETG filament to come in so I can reprint mine to be more durable. If that works well then I could make them for any phone, I could probably make it adjustable now that I think about it.

PETG is much trickier to print in than PLA. Expect a lot of trial and error as you get your hotend, bed, and print speed tweaked to work with it.
