I started having problems with my passenger side power running board. Sometimes it starts to retract but returns to the extended position. I've searched for motors but can't find any that show they fit a 2018 or newer, just 2017 and earlier. Are the 3rd gen motors a direct replacement for the 4th gen?

I started having probs just like yours two months ago. One dealer cleaned and lubed the step but that didn’t help. The second dealer seemed more knowledgeable and responsive: replaced a Motor on it. No fix. They have received an actuator that is separate from the motor and believe it is the fix. Still under warranty. Appt Thursday. Will post the results.

Took a pic of the part label on the passenger side running board motor. I think that I will order a motor without bracket off amazon and compare side by side to see. I can return the amazon motor very easily if it isn't compatible, just drop it off at the local Kohl's store, they accept returns. I will go with any that match up electrically plug-wise. I've noticed that some are round and others are square with rounded corners. Found a site with images for OEM parts, will have to actually get the correct part # as they have more than two options, even though I specified expedition max. (If I'm forced to buy from ford, $300+ for one side)

Took off the passenger side motor/hinge front and back. Ordered this pair. The motor is the only thing that I plan on changing. Local dealer quoted me a price for the JL10016A506J $475.75 plus tax (motor and hinge assembly). I will update again when the amazon motors come in.

Just to close out this thread as an FYI. The motors that I bought from amazon are ALMOST an exact match. Three exceptions: 1. The flat spot on the shaft that the wedge seats in was longer than the 4th gen but had zero impact on use. 2. The polarity is reversed but easily fixed. (the running board wants to go in when the door is open and out when closed) To reverse the polarity, I simply cut and swapped the wires on the side of the harness plug with two pins. When plugged into the vehicle, the motor responded correctly producing the 1/4 turn in the correct direction (clockwise/counter clockwise) to operate the running board. 3. The holes that the plastic cover is screwed into are not threaded and may be drilled slightly bigger than the original part. I just tapped it and used a bolt out of my coffee-can-of-bolts.

After all that, I got the same issue, starts to retract but comes back out. Finally broke out the oil pump can and liberally applied regular motor oil all over the hinges. Yes this fixed it. Now every time that I change the oil, I drench the hinges on the running boards. I left the new motor on.

No need to cut wires,, If your motor is running backwards, take out the 3 phillips screws on the back cap and spin the cap 180°. That will fix your issue running in reverse.
