Hello -

My 2011 Expedition suffered the all-too-common rocker tick and eventually the rocker broke in half at 170k miles. I'm afraid this situation damaged the intake valve (pictures attached) and I'm unsure if I can use the valve compression tool to replace the rocker.

Would anyone be able to tell me if the valve keeper/stem is shot from these photos? I had a shop pull the cover and take the pictures, I'm unsure what condition the lash adjusters are in but I will assume they're still operational.

I would love to slap a new rocker in and get a few more thousand miles out of this engine if it's possible. I understand this is the bare minimum.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

What does the shop say ? It looks like it spit 1 of the 2 valve keepers as well ? Cam lobe torn up ? If you're gonna keep the vehicle it might be worth looking at a remanned motor with a warranty and peace of mind.

The shop wants to remove the head to replace everything which costs more than the truck is worth. Also you're right, upon closer look it looks like 1 of the 2 keepers is missing.

Yes, cam lobe has wear.

I'm not looking to keep the vehicle as it will most likely be junked because the repair costs are outweighing the value of the vehicle. A remanned engine plus the labor to install will be a tall order.

I'm now thinking I will do the rope trick and replace the valve spring components along with the rocker and see what happens.

If I were in your position, looking for a bare minimum approach, I'd use the valve spring compressor tool and replace the keepers with new ones, and a new roller follower. While you are in there, give each of the other roller followers a check for play and/or flat spots.

Remove the rockers from that cylinder and do a leak down test (external air pressure and guage) to determine if the valve is unbent and seated. Then do the rope trick and CAREFULLY try to see if the valve is free to move up and down and around in the valve guide. Inspect the groove for the valve keepers to be sure that new keepers wont dislodge causing further damage. After replacing the seal, spring and keepers, do another leak down test.

You didn't mention anything beyond the tell-tale ticking sound. The lack of other noises might be your best indicator that only replacing the rocker is justified. Also, lift out the adjuster and see if you can compress its tip up and down into the adjuster's body. As well as traveling up and down to move the rocker, the adjuster supplies engine oil to the underside of the rocker. No lubrication may have been the cause of the rocker failing.
