7.3 Godzilla into 3rd gen? Anyone?

Thinking about new power for my ‘08. Anyone performed this swap?

The crate motor just became available on July 1st. I don’t think anybody has swapped one yet let alone in an expedition.

That and the fact it will be into a 5 figure price tag almost instantly, even if it can be done you're unlikely to see one soon I'm sure. I'd figure most in this platform would likely just do a built 5.4 along w a turbo or supercharged. Long history of builds and plentiful options with some big power numbers. Probably half the cost as well.

My first post here on the forum. I'd be very interested in doing a swap (or hearing about) for the new, twin turbo engine they're currently putting in Expeditions. Any thoughts on that?

I's say, go find a complete iron block or AL GT500 motor. Keep it a 5.4 and run it (as built) supercharged. Sky is the limit there.

I like your thinking. I just made an offer on an 08' that has the knock knock knock. I have a 7.3 IDI to drop into it. That engine was getting 22 mpg in my F250, so I want to haul a small camper and get some mpg's. really just looking for something fun to do with this engine.

It should fit, but will need a LOT of work. Having the entire donor vehicle helps. You'll have to change the entire fuel system (should be able to keep tank, but will need some mods) and the electronic system. Swapping computers may be a challenge -- most now sense a module in the instrument cluster so if you pull the computer you can't use it in another vehicle. You might have to use an aftermarket computer or get the factory ECU reprogrammed... unless you can swap the instrument clusters as well. You will definitely need to upgrade the front springs for the heavier engine, and maybe other suspension components. F-250s still use a Twin I-Beam front suspension, IIRC, not the double wishbone of the F-150/Expy.

Before you "drop" that 7.3 in there be prepared to spend tons of $'s! You're going from
a 3\4 ton chassis into a 1\2 ton chassis and without changing the entire front suspension you're simply asking for trouble if it isn't done correctly. I also would be suspect about the frame and drive components. If you want to build an off road beast then the sky is the limit and the diesel would be a lot of fun. I've owned every generation of the diesels since 1984 and the 6.7 is by far the best. If I were looking for street performance and being old school i would put a built 460 in it. Cheaper to build the 5.4 or get a 2015 and tune it. This isn't a drop in. The engines are completely different.

before going to that level of expense, time and labor, I'd give some serious thought to dropping in one of the million mile 12V Cummins engines.

If you are getting 22 with an IDI, you must be driving downhill always. No way
