I have a 98 expedition with the 5.4 and this is something it has done for years and im tired of it. At half a tank if you hit a turn to hard or go down a hill it will start to stutter or die. I know they have long tanks and the pickup is in the back but theres no way this is normal. And i know its half a tank because you cant put much gas in it if you try. Any help would be appreciated.

Probably has the wrong fuel pump. The pick-up is too short.

What does your gas gauge say when it starts sputtering?

I'm with Tom. Sounds like some guy had a pump laying around and wanted to sell the SUV. It might be out of another Ford, so their wasn't a lot of wiring difference. A quality pump costs over $175.00, and without pulling the tank and pump, you'll never know. The fact you can only put back in 10 gallons or so kinda leans that direction.

Hey sorry guys it didn't notify me i had replies. My grandfather bought it new off the lot and gave it to me later on its the original fuel pump so know its not the wrong pump. At half a tank if you turn hard or go downhill is when it sputters/or dies. Gauge shows half a tank when it does this and you can only put half a tank of gas in so i know the gauge is working correctly.

Check your fuel pressure. Maybe your getting enough fuel pressure when the tank is full but not enough when it's at 1/2 a tank.

Was this problem ever resolved? If you took the truck into a parking lot and drove it in a tight circle (left or right turns), could you make the engine stall/run rough?
