1998 ford expedition xlt 5.4 4x4 179,000 several owners before me, ive had it for 6 months. Driving the other day, drove about 2 miles from home then stopped at stop sign, turned right, started to accelerate like normal, got to about 25 mph and the rpm went up and the speed went down. Pulled over, cried a little, opened the hood, fluid seemed to be at normal level, could use a change but no major abnormal smells or colors, felt the trans lines on the radiator, not overly hot if anything not even warmed all the way up yet. I was able to limp in a couple miles back home on the shoulder. Even with rpm at 4k it wouldn't get over 25 mph, i did about 10 mph all the way home. Yes im aware that driving it home could have caused more damage however its Christmas time and i have 4 kids so i don't have money to throw at a tow truck and i was also on my way to work when it went out. I've already assumed the trans is shot but just wanted to see if anyone here would have anything i could check that it could be. I just put a lot of work and money into this truck and am on the fence about fixing it or selling it.

Nothing you can do - transmission reman time. Don't waste time or money changing the filter/fluid.
