Hi,

lately my expedition has been running pretty rough as if it's surging.

Under 40 MPH everything looks to be working pretty well.

Once I increase my speed it feels like the vehicle is surging. Once I reach and level off at a certain speed, such as 60mph, after a few minutes the vehicle smooths out.

There are no code to read.

My reader listed an optional KOER test which I ran three times and I got the following codes:

First Run:

P1127 KOER exhaust temp out of range, 02 sensor test not completed.

Second and Third Run:

P0703 Brake Switch B Input Circuit and
P1780 Transmission switch O/D Cancel) Circuit Out Of Range

Any suggestions on how to narrow down this problem would be appreciated.

I'm guessing the catalytic converters are starting to get plugged and restricting the exhaust flow.
There's YouTube videos on how to diagnose it.

The following was copied from the 99 Ford service manual

P1127 - Exhaust Not Warm Enough, Downstream Sensor Not Tested

The HEGO monitor uses an exhaust temperature model to determine when the HO2S heaters are cycled ON. The test fails when the inferred exhaust temperature is below a minimum calibrated value.

Engine not operating long enough prior to performing KOER self-test.
Exhaust system too cool.

Monitor HO2S Heater PIDs to determine their ON/OFF state. DTC P1127 will be present if the exhaust is not hot.

P1780 - Transmission Control Switch Out of Self-Test Range

During KOER self-test the TCS has to be cycled, if not cycled a DTC is set

TCS circuit short or open
Damaged TCS switch
Damaged PCM

Verify the TCS switch cycles ON/OFF

P0703 - Brake Switch Circuit Input Malfunction

Indicates PCM did not receive a brake pedal position (BPP) input.

Open or short in BPP circuit
Open or short in stoplamp circuits
Damaged PCM
Malfunction in module(s) connected to BPP circuit. (Rear Electronic Module [REM] Windstar and LS6/LS8 or Lighting Control Module (LCM) Continental and Town Car.
Damaged brake switch
Misadjusted brake switch

Check for proper function of stoplamps. Follow correct Self-Test procedures, refer to Section 2 of Quick Test .

Clear the codes and start over. Drive normal as if nothing is wrong and see which code pops up first.

OK I'm finally getting a consistent code: cylinder 3 misfiring.

So, I've had the plugs and fuel filter changed.

Next thing I can think of is changing the COP.

Have I missed anything?

Can you remove the #3 COP without removing the fuel rails?

Thanks

So I changed the COP today and it's still misfiring.

So first it was code P0303 - Cylinder #3 Misfire.

I've changed the fuel filter, #3 COP and spark plug.

After changing the COP and going for a test drive I got a new code: P0353 Ignition Coil C Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

From OBD-Codes.com

Two wires are dedicated to each coil. One is a battery feed usually from the power distribution center. The other wire is the coil driver circuit from the PCM. The PCM grounds/ungrounds this circuit to activate or deactivate the coil. The coil driver circuit is monitored by the PCM for faults If an open or a short is detected in the driver circuit for coil number 3, a P0353 may set. Also, depending on the vehicle, the PCM may also shut down the fuel injector to the cylinder also.

Multimeter and circuit trace time. If you don't have one I have a link that gives you the basics on what to look for.

Hi,

never mind I did a triple check and the connector wasn't on it as tight as it could be.

After I tightened the connector the truck started and hummed perfectly.

thanks for the help.
