99 Ford Expedition 5 years and trying to stay running!

Hello. I have owned my 99 Ford Expedition for 5 years and it has been the most reliable vehicle I have had. But ever since I drove from GA to CA and back I am having a problem with a melted o2 sensor wire on my 99 Ford Expedition. It is throwing p0135 and the dealer is saying that they need to drop the tranny to access it and it will cost $1700 plus. Is there an easier way to fix it and are they ripping me off?

It's all labor in the job they are getting you for. The two top ones are the more difficult ones.

Spray them down with rust-penetrant. Cut the wires if they are shot. Heat them up with some MAPP gas. Start working them off.

The drivers side is accessible through the wheel well. If the truck has no lift on it pull the inner fender out. The Passengers side (the harder one) is accessible from underneath weird angles points up and towards the tranny. O2 sensor socket with a breaker bar will do the job.

Thanks for the reply! Its actually the wire that connects to the engine wire harness near the firewall that is melted and causing the fault. The o2 sensor is working fine.

I am assuming its before the sensor connector. Which side? Do not take it to the stealer to fix it. A tranny shop may be your best bet especially if tranny needs to moved back. A good repair shop may be a lot cheaper. If your planning on doing it yourself plan on a lot of swearing and fill the jar with quarters.

Figures, I got that its burned is it the engine harness or the sensor harness form connector to sensor.

How did it burn/melt, or do you mean its shorted/grounded out, got cut/broke?

If the tranny or engine have never been removed that harness if i'm not mistaken (I could be wrong I would have to look at my spare harness) is wrapped and is bolted to the passengers head or tranny then there is a harness clip that pops into a hole on the block and the sensor harness has a clip as well. All to prevent it from touching anything. Real tight quarters back there under one inch especially at the heads.

Are you looking to do it yourself or pay someone to do it?

A shop would be your best bet the cleaner the better or try a transmission shop.

The wire is actually melted, no smell. It is closer to the engine harness and yes it is tight! I paid a guy with small hands to get in there. He spliced another connector on but the p0135 code came back. I wonder if he wired it right?

Like they said above, it's all labor and most dealerships(especially around me) charge at least $150/hr. I'd bet you could find a auto/tranny shop that will do it for half that.
