Here's me story. I had a budget of $3500 for an Expedition 4X4 with 160,000 miles or less. Found a 97 with 140,000 miles on it for $3000, but it sold just before I got there to look at it. I find this 99 with 100k mikes on, but the owner says it needs a trans. I price a rebuilt trans for $2200 with a one year guarantee. Seller wants $1500, but when I see it, it needs some body work on the right side. I offer him $1200 and he accepts. Then I find a 99 EB that has a good trans but needs an engine and air shocks. We agree to trade trucks and shop will swap my engine to the EB and install the air shocks for $1500. Total $3700, just over budget. When I get my truck to the shop for the trade, the owner starts saying that there is more body work needed than he expected and so on, but we had the agreement in writing so I felt like he should have honored the deal. Anyway we make a new contract to swap some body parts that he felt would make the trade more fair. The next morning I get to thinking that I described my truck fully to the best of my ability, and he signed the agreement sight unseen, therefore; he should have honored it. I even offered to just pay for his truck, pay for the engine swap and keep both trucks, but he denied. That made me think that my truck was worth more than he was letting on. I decided to just keep my truck. I get it towed to Jim Jennings transmission, and they find that the trans is fine, somehow the electronic shift sensor came unplugged. The total cost was $118 and I'm on the road. So now after I get it MD inspected and change the fluids, hoses and belts, I plan to spend the $2200 that I budgeted for the new trans on body work to make her look young again. I get pictures of the before and after up as well.
