Intermittently, and without any obvious cause, my a/c will stop blowing high through the dash vents. If I turn the fan up, I can hear the air volume increase, but it won't come out of the vents. It's going somewhere.

Any ideas? I'm guessing a gate somewhere is failing, but don't even know where to begin.

I don't know what an evap case is. I think I have a cabin filter. I'll look tonight at home. I know if I do it hasn't been changed in years.

This is where the air goes to be conditioned ,the evaporator and the heater core live here. The air that comes from the outside might pass through a cabin filter first.
as the filter gets dirty the volume gets less and less possably causing evap freez up
and your problem

My brothers 01 eddie bauer does the same, but the cold air actually comes out the defroster/floor area.. My 95 Bronco does the same, when under a load or driving up a hill, the AC will not come out the vents and redirect towards the defroster or floor area.. I hate that.

My bronco started doing that years ago and we found a damaged vacuum hose/line in the engine compartment, it was a vacuum line that connected into that big vacuum ball thing? After we replaced the hose/line, it didnt do it anymore, but just as of month ago,, it started up again.. I think its a vacuum leak someplace again...
