I have a satellite radio system and want to add an AC plug behind the dash that will power on and off with the car. And I don't know how to do it. I understand the concept of finding a hot wire, splicing, and doing that...but I've never attempted something like this.

What I need is an "Idiot's Guide to Installing an AC Plug"

Any help?

I could help bu tneed a wiring diagram. I'll do some investigating tomorrow (11/04) and see what I come up with.

The real question is: why do you need an AC plug?

Do you have an inverter to install too?

I have an XM radio receiver, and I want the wires to all be behind the dash. It plugs into the cig plug, so to keep it out of sight I need a new one back there.

Johnny,

That would be a new DC outlet, not AC. But we are with you now.

If you know the concept of finding the hot wire, then the best thing you can do is get a Chilton or Haynes manual, and find a switched fuse to run this from. It is not that hard, but we will try to get you some more info.

Ah shucks, sorry I mixed that up. Yes what I want is a DC plug, basically just another cig lighter plug. And I want this plug to be controlled by the ignition, so I do NOT want it to be always on (like my current DC plugs are)

And I understand the concept of the hot wire, but take that loosely. I know that's what I need, but I don't really know the first thing about doing it.

Some of my issues are these:

Some ppl have said to find the wires leading to my current cig lighter, but that would give me an always on plug, which I don't want

Some have said to wire it to the wire in my stereo, so that it'll go on with the ignition, but that may be more complicated than it's worth

Others have said that I should have some empty slots in my fusebox where I could wire one that'll be triggered by the ignition
