Any way a mechanic can check a rack n pinion?

You all know the story...

But even though I've had absolutely no leaks, I thought it'd be wise to perhaps buy a rack n pinion off of some guy I met who is parting out his exact model. He says the rack n pinion is fine and I can have it for 60 bucks and that it has no leaks.

Two questions:

Can a mechanic make sure it's in good shape with no leaks, off of the rest of the system.

If so, do you think it would last long enough to forgoe buying a new one?

Without being able to test it under pressure the only other options are to disassemble and inpect or take a chance.
