awd troubles

I have a 99 awd eb expy , the awd makes a popping noise almost like its jumping in and out of gear. It all started when I had a tire rod end go out and i hit a gaurdrail at about 40 mph . I had the tire rod end and the bearing replaced , Im thinking that it may be coming from mthe cv shaft but am unsure now because when it is put into 4h the popping stops . It only does this under accelleration and not at all in 4h . Can someone help , I cant afford another trip to the mechanic I just gave him 18hundred bucks to install new engine and am pretty mechanical just need to know where to start.

ok i pulled fuse 104 and the popping went away . Im thinking that it may be related to 1) transfer case 2) shift motor . Ill service the transfer case and check the operation of the shift motor but it seems to be working fine in a4wd 4h 4l . just in a4wd i get the poppng noise I thinks it is the shift motor slamming in and out of 4h .anything else to check that comes to mind .

For anyone else reading, the 104 fuse is for the "4x4 Shift Motor & Clutch".

Not too familiar with the 1st gen Expys, but is this what the "brown wire mod" fixes?
