I am on vacation in Miami Florida and we decide to take a trip down to key west to do a tour (jet ski, snorkle, etc.) So I am I95 South Bound and something comes off a truck like a big piece of metal and I cannot avoid hitting it. Had an 18wheeler on my left and a car on my right. I ran over about a 2 to 3 ft metal object. Cleared it and thought everything was okay. Drove about another 5 mins and started smelling gas!! So I stopped on look under my Expedtion EL Eddie and its leaking gas bad from the tank. Got it to the nearest ford dealership and waiting for a new tank to be replaced. The object put about an inch gash in the tank. Didnt make it to key west and my rental is a suburban which is making me miss the expy even more!! Be safe out there guys and glad someone didnt throw out a cig while I was driving who knows what could have happened.

I've been in the printing biz my whole life, I have to ask......
What was a "printer" doing in the road?

Also spent about 20 years in Miami / Ft. Lauderdale. Your lucky you weren't involved in the daily road rage & gun battles.

I'm betting it was just sitting there unless it just fell off someones truck! :p

Somebody's unsecured load maybe?!

That sucks.. Sorry to hear but at least its an easy repair and did not do more damage or cause an accident!

3rd gens come with skid plates on the fuel tank?

My first gen did not. Well...it does have plastic cover that I don't think would have helped much given the OP's situation.

Otherwise just cut a piece of heavy gauge steel and bolt it on. I know at least for the first gens, only trucks with the HD towing package came with a skid plate from the factory. Mine is all beat up so it has served it's purpose well haha.

That's horrible man. I'm headed in that direction next week. I'll definitely be on the look out for rubbish, now more than ever. Hope everything turns out alright for you.

Thanks bedrck46 for the link! And DJLobo79 hope you have a good trip I love it here just people dont know how to drive and I have still seen other crap/debri on the road. Im still here stranded waiting on my Expy to be repaired supposed to be finished today but they sent the wrong part. Should be ready tomorrow morning. I am not enjoying driving this Suburban it sways like a boat, small cup holders, doesnt seem to have as much leg space, and does seem to set up as high on the roadway. Im sure people have complaints about expy but I just think its a better vehicle.

they did have a factory skid plate but it is rare. I had a 07 with the sport option, had a engine, transfer case and gas tank skid plate.

Most Gen III do not have any skid plates that I am aware of. SUVs are trending more towards the "S" and less "UV".

I caught a retread on I-95 on the Susquehana Bridge in my travels. Tractor trailer on one side, median on the other, no place to go... Thankfully it only left a mark and only cosmetic damage.

Be careful out there!
