Most tensioners use a 1/2 ratchet to release the tension. Just insert the ratchet and turn and the tension releases. Hold it there and slide the belt off, then slowly release.
Yep, that's why I carry a 1/2" torque wrench in the back along with my old belt. It'll function as a belt removal should the need arise.
As an aside, it's a 3/8 socket square for an 02 Mustang.
since you'll have it apart, look into an underdrive pulley kit, it changes three pulleys to eliminate some of the extra drag, doesn't change the charging, or cooling char. of the truck either. adds a little "umph". not much of anything else.
Actually it is right handed and u need a 1 7/16 open end wrench and I use a hammer to give it a sharp rap and it will loosen right up.
