Has anyone blacked out the chrome parts on the exterior? Specifically the luggage rack, door handles, and that chrome piece on the tailgate.

I am wanting to black out my truck and was hoping someone had done this so I can spend less time fixing mistakes. :)

Thanks

Well I used a product called Plasti-Dip to black out my chrome rims and trim. I dont have any pics of the trim or mirror caps, only the rims. The stuff is really easy to use, and it dries flat. Best part of it is that it is possible to peel it off much like a latex paint in case you decide you do not like the look. As sketchy as that probably sounds, honestly it does seem to hold up fine. I have only had mine done for a few weeks, but there are guys here that have had their trim done for more than a year with minimal need for touch-ups (which are also easy to do, spray some more on, and it molds right in). It can be found at pretty much any large home hardware store in their paint section usually. Hope that helps you out some, I love the way my truck looks, and it only cost me $15. You really cant lose!

Thanks I'll give that a try. Did you take the parts off to paint or just mark it off?

I would remove the parts, but you could tape it off, one suggestion make sure its warm out (at least 70) when you do it or it wont turn out right

If you want to try the Plasti-Dip, check out youtube for dipyourcar.com or go to their site. Very informative and lots of how-to videos.

I took my rims off, but I did the trim of my truck and the mirrors while they were still on there. I used a lot of painters tape to mask the paint, but even if it gets on there, let it dry, and wipe it off with a microfiber cloth. Yeah it being warm out does help, but I did everything while it was well below freezing. MAKE SURE the cans are room temp though, otherwise yeah it wont work right. I just left the cans inside while i was prepping the areas. One more thing, the paint does come out as a flat black, so if you are looking for a more glossy look, might want to think about a clear coat or a paint over the plasti-dip.

If you want to do a nice job on that chrome, go to the duplicolor web site. They have a product that is specifically made to go over chrome and give it a blacked-out look.

Save the plastic dip for your tool handles.

I plastidipped everything while it was on my truck. Just masked real well. If you are masking, make sure you take off the tape while it is still wet, or the dip will stretch with the tape being pulled. Did lots of stuff on my Jeep too. It's holding up very well. I have only touched up the bumper cap once, but I only did 2 coats on it, and should have done the recommended 4. So a rock put a line in it. Re sprayed it, and the stuff just blends right in perfect.

Hopefully someday, I'll just paint, or bedline it all, but for 5 bucks a can, it's worth it to me.

Makes it look like black chrome and it is sick!

Thanks for all the tips guys! A lot of helpful stuff here. I think I am going to go with the duplicolor. I will post some pics when I get it done.
