Wife started the expedition 3 days ago and she had to hold the key in the starting position because she said it seemed like the starter was going slow like it was having a hard time starting.i asked her if seemed like batt was weak she said no because lights didn't dim or anything.it wasn't the spark because as soon as the starter sped up the motor started instantly.could it be something needs to be lubed or something??

I would say every 3 weeks the starter does make that loud metal grind that other owners have experienced ,so I'm sure one of the teeth is broken but i don't feel the need to come out the pocket on the starter just yet if i don't have to.i can live with the sound once every 3 weeks.but .

But the starter having a hard time to turn what can be the cause????

Starter might just be old and starting to show signs. The battery may have a bad cell that can act up. It might be adviseable to get both checked and replace whichever one is bad. Either one could leave stranded in a bad spot.

We have a recent starter > solenoid > connections thread that might be useful to read.

You're only as good as the weakest link.
