I have been searching for solutions to the Ford 5.4L 2V ticking issue. Someone posted a very nice diagram (might have been a Ford TSB or part of a Ford manual) that had roadmap to diagnose the ticking issue. It was written for a Ford mechanic. It was a block diagram that said first do X, if ticking stops, then do Y, if not then X. And so on. Last block on the diagram was to replace lash adjusters and cam rockers. Started with belt issues (idler pulley), etc. I printed the diagram, but wife threw out the printout and now I cannot find it online again.
Can someone help me find this? Anyone know what I'm talking about?

There's lots of you tube videos online, but basically what we all here recommend, is first be sure your oil level is sufficient, that you have 5w30 or 10/30 in warmer climates. And that you have a quality oil filter on vehicle. Some of the cheap ones don't work. Second, using a stethoscope or thin screwdriver, narrow down where the tickings originated from. Then pull that valve cover, remove those lifters, cam followers, and inspect and replace worn parts. Usually it's a worn roller rocker, or a lifter that's not pumping up, or in some cases, frozen in it's bore due to no oil . Youll also need to visualize and inspect, as well as measure camshaft. Hope that helps. Let us know what you find.

You should not have the 3v Triton. Should be 2v. Check belt, tensioner & 2 idler pulleys. Mine had 99,418 miles & top 2 idler pulleys would not turn easily with belt removed & making noise but not squealing. Replaced both & no more noise. Got mine on rockauto.com. Motorcraft

Thank you very much. Still can't find the block diagram but checking everything driven by the belt is first order of business. Found a 3V tsb that lists what to check--its similar to the 2V except for the cam phasers.

I am just about to put my engine back in after my second rebuild at 254K. I had ticking for about 6 months before I tore into the engine. If your ticking is only on the right side, px side, then I would suspect an oil pressure problem on that head. It could be clogged, the right bank is at the end of the oil path. It might be as simple as a stuck lifter. Starting with the least painful, I would pop of the valve cover and change all the lifters. Check the roller rockers to make sure they are working. If you take off one or two of the caps on the camshaft towers and see lines on the cam journals, you probably have low oil pressure on that side. My Expedition is also a 2003 Eddie Bauer, 4WD. My transmission went out, so since I had to rebuild the tranny, I just decide to do the engine as well. My heads needed work, and my cams needed to be replaced.

Ford modular fuel injectors, make a tick sound, as they release fuel. I drove a 2010 E-250, 4.6l 3v, with 280K. It was ticking at idle. Turned out, it was 4qts low. There was no indication, gauge or light.
