I am wanting to buy 4 door speakers for my expy and have kinda been wishy washy on whether or not to hook an amp to them. I know they will sound better with one but it will also be a bit of a pain. Anyway, my question is I am looking at the kenwood 3 way door speakers and I think they are 4 ohms impedance and 80 watts a piece rms. What type of amp would I need to get the rms right? I know I will need a 4 channel amp but to I just plug the pos and neg from the speakers to the pos and neg on the amp or is it harder than that?

i run what sounds like the same kenwoods in my truck without an amp and they sound pretty good to me..i have had the volume up to about 34 and there wasnt an distortion

its hard if you decide to hardwire em in, idk if new styles have stock amps but im sure they do.

ya they do just stay stock, plug and play.

when you start getting into the 150watt rms speakers then werte talking amp time

yes its that simple to connect the speakers to the amp. just like subwoofers since youre not running components....that would be another story...

you have to splice the old speakers out when you put the kenwoods in. the stock speakers use a connecter. when i did mine the 2 different wire colors didnt matter. the speakers worked either way

I dont want to plug the speakers up to my radio alone. I want to utilize them like they are supposed to be. I am willing to spend the time to run wire

You need to stay consistant on the colors. If you reverse the polarity on a speaker, it will be out of phase with the others.

Just get a multimeter (set to vdc) and touch the speaker wires while something is playing on the stereo. If a negative number shows up, then the polarity is reversed. Flip the wires and read it again. It should be a positive number. Then just mark the wires and go on to the next speaker.

honestly, I'd add an amp. You can get really nice amps for cheap if you look around. Check out the Elemental Designs NINe.4, you can pick it up for only $225 and it's a great amp. Rated at 65Wx4 RMS but they are underrated, so it would end up being a good match for those speakers. I'd also do a little more shopping around for speakers, could probably find a better deal on a better speaker. Woofersetc has JL Audio VRs for $120 a pr, Diamond D3s for $120 a pr, MB Quart DKG116s for $70 a pr, and Eclipse SP6510s for $99 a pr, all awesome speakers. Was looking at 6.5" speakers by the way. I'd do the little bit of work and convert from the 6x8s that I'm pretty sure you have in your truck, better sound quality, cheaper price.

amp and speakers

Everything in my truck is Alpine...Except for my door speakers which are Kenwood,I have a 4 channel alpine running them @ 50 watts,the amp has a built in cross over and over all is a very clean amp power wise.I don't turn it up passed 18...no need to it will leave your ears ringing for a bit but to each is own,you will be happy with a decent 4 channel amp and those 3 ways.Good luck.
