This is regarding my 2006 expedition limited. Today after driving about 80 miles to and around town, I came home and unloaded. Shortly after wards the wife was about to head out in it, she started it and noticed that the check engine light stayed on and that the engine was idling rough and that there was little to no response from the engine when she pressed in the gas. After a small amount of time the engine backfired and shut off. I am not able to move it, so I have no way to get any codes. Can anyone help me out here.

Fuel pump clogged or gone bad. If it had check engine light it still comes out in the memory with the key on

OK just a quick update here. I let my truck cool down awhile and went back out to check if it still did the same thing, well this time it started, however this time it responded to the gas pedal being push in and was running a little rough, no where near how it was, the check engine light was still on. I placed it in gear and had no noticeable change in the roughness.

The fuel pump has been replaced some 4000 miles ago.

just because it was replaced some 4000 miles ago Don't rule it out

what brand pump was used

was the fuel filter replaced when the pump was replaced

I'd have to say I really don't know the answer to either of those. It was replaced just prior to me buying it. When I got her she had 48,000 miles, now she's at 52,000 miles.

so you don't really know if the pump was changed or not?

but get the codes and post them

You may also want to look into a OBD II blue tooth device and the Torque Pro app for a Smart Phone

Well today I drove my truck 30 miles to the local Autozone and the only thing that happened was the check engine light stayed on. Anyways here is the codes that came up:

P1233: Fuel system disabled, inertia switch tripped or open.

P0191: Fuel rail pressure sensor condition, power train control module monitors the fuel system pressure. Fuel pump low-fuel pump defective. Fuel pressure regulator defective, replace fuel filter.

P0174: Fuel trim bank two condition, the ECM has detected a rich or lean Air/Fuel ratio.

The last code has several other probable causes listed below it, to include HO2S21 Heated Oxygen sensor.

I'm not sure what else I can do, she seems to be running just fine now. I won't be able to get it to my mechanic until after the 22nd, because he's on vacation. Not to sure if I should drive it the 2 miles to and from to work until then.

P0171 - System Too Lean (Bank 1)
Description: The adaptive fuel strategy continuously monitors the fuel delivery hardware. The test fails when the adaptive fuel tables reach a rich calibrated limit. Refer to Section 1, Powertrain Control Software Fuel Trim for more information.

Possible Causes: Fuel System:
Damaged or leaking fuel pulse damper
Fuel filter plugged or dirty
Damaged or worn fuel pump
Leaking fuel pump check valve
Leaking/contaminated fuel injectors
Low fuel pressure or running out of fuel
EVAP canister purge valve is leaking when the canister is clean
Fuel supply line restricted
Fuel rail pressure sensor bias
Air Induction System:
Air leaks after the mass air flow (MAF) sensor
Vacuum leaks
PCV system is leaking or the valve is stuck open
Improperly seated engine oil dipstick
Exhaust System:
Exhaust leaks in the exhaust manifold gasket or mating gaskets before or near the HO2S
EGR System:
Vacuum hose disconnected on exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system module (ESM) applications
EGR valve tube/gasket leak
EVR solenoid vacuum leak
Secondary Air Injection:
Damaged secondary air injection system or a mechanically stuck valve
Air Measurement System:
Damaged or contaminated MAF sensor

P0191 - Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance

Description: The comprehensive component monitor (CCM) checks the fuel rail pressure (FRP) sensor for an acceptable fuel pressure. The test fails when the fuel pressure falls below or exceeds a minimum/maximum calibrated value for a calibrated period of time.

Possible Causes: High fuel pressure
Low fuel pressure
Damaged FRP sensor
Excessive resistance in the circuit
Vacuum leaks
Low or no fuel

P1233 - Fuel Pump Driver Module Disabled or Off Line
Description: LS:
This DTC indicates the powertrain control module (PCM) is not receiving the fuel pump information on the communication link from the rear electronics module (REM). Refer to the Workshop Manual Section 419-10, Multifunction Electronic Modules for REM self-test/diagnostics.

All Others:
The PCM monitors the fuel pump monitor (FPM) circuit from the fuel pump driver module (FPDM). With the key ON, engine OFF or key ON, engine running the FPDM continuously sends a duty cycle signal to the PCM through the FPM circuit. The test fails if the PCM stops receiving the duty cycle signal.

Possible Causes: Inertia fuel shutoff (IFS) switch needs to be reset
Open FPDM ground circuit
Open circuit to FPDM PWR RLY
Open FPDM PWR circuit
Open or shorted FPM circuit (engine should start)
Damaged IFS switch
Damaged FPDM PWR RLY
Damaged FPDM

Did you have the codes reset?

You may want to look under the rear drivers side near the spare tire for the FUEL PUMP DRIVERS MODULE (FPDM) For any signs of corrosion

ok let your mechanic know about all of this maybe you should make a print out of the codes and information
The FPDM has been know to cause problems but mostly from corrosion

if your problem has to do with the fuel pump relay which isn't user replaceable although it can be replaced or repaired but FORD will tell you that the whole fuse block has to be replaced.

If it does fail while driving it you than may need to have it towed So that choice would be up to you if you want to drive it or not

Some of those codes are historic, clear the codes and let it post new codes. For instance how can the inertia switch be open but you're driving it?

First up would be to establish what the fuel pressure is.
