"Check fuel cap" indicator in the instrument panel

My "check fuel cap" indicator light keeps coming on in the instrument panel. Any suggestions as to why this is coming on? I check the fuel cap and it is on and in the correct position.

Most likely the seal is bad on the cap itself. Id start cheap and simple and replace the gas cap.

Thanks Tom, I will do that, I did consider that also, haven't done it yet, but was curious as to if this a common problem with the Expeditions and if so, all the potential problems that it could be, Thank you for your input.

There's no physical switch that checks if the fuel cap is on or not. The evap system is probably detecting a leak and thinks it may be a loose fuel cap. Replace it with a new one first, if that doesn't fix it you'll have to diagnose the evap system and check for leaks or loose hoses. Most common on these I believe is the solenoid.

yes this is common becuz of the constant use of the cap...ur throwing codes so its not getting a good seal...

where's the location for this solenoid? how do I diagnose it? Do you have a picture or the part number on a 2003 XLT 4.6L?

But it's the 9C915 on that picture. Usually these are more exposed to the elements and can fail or get dirty. You have to diagnose the EVAP properly first though, fuel cap is usually the first suspect.
