I have an '03 Expy and my message centre is warning that I should check Fuel Cap. I checked it and it is closed, but the warning is still there, do I need to get a new one? I've never had to replace a fuel filler cap on any of my vehicles.

Anyone else have this happen to them?

Thanks,

Brian

My dad's 01 Cadillac DTS had a similar problem a while back. It eventually caused the check engine light to come on. Which wasn't a problem, it was just because the check cap problem was constant so don't be surprised if it comes on at some point.

I think what fixed the problem was a new sensor and ended up needing a reprogram, but that could be Cadillac specific.

I'd say the sensor is faulty, which isn't in the cap, but the base. Personally I'd worry since I hate having stuff on my truck that isn't working right/rattling/other annoying stuff. But it doesn't pose a problem really, unless the check engine light comes on. Which still doesn't post a problem, only until another problem arises that would cause the check engine to come on since you wouldn't notice it with the light already on.

I had that happen to mine alot. Took it the first time, and they (Ford) replaced the cap. Next time it happened, they said gas was making its way up, and triggering the sensor, so they "dropped the tank" and replaced it, along with a new cap. Third time, I was apparently out of warrenty.

It stayed on, until I got my Sniper programmer. Since you have to reflash the car computer, it would reset the code. It came up one more time, but after my last tune, it has yet to come up, and it's been a couple months.

So, really, I can't tell you what it is, but that has been my experience with that problem/annoyance. By the way, I have a 2003 as well.
