Have a 2003 EB 5.4. It makes a clattering sound for about 2 seconds when starting up. It's the classic cam phaser problem sound that affects the 3V engines. Had this on a 2006 Navigator and had to replace the phasers. Anyway, I heard the 2V's don't have Phasers. Maybe I heard wrong. I recently had the timing chain cover gasket replaced and they replaced the chain guides but it still makes the noise. Also, I'm using the motorcraft 820S oil filter. Any ideas?

Does the sound seem like the upper end of the motor? Were the old guides still in one piece or had they started coming apart?
First thing that comes to mind is that the lifters are bleeding down then pumping up with the oil pressure.

Yes, it's at the upper portion of the motor. The old guides were coming apart so they were replaced.

I hope the pieces of the chain guides that came off have been removed from the oil pan. If not you risk the oil pick up getting blocked off which equals a very bad day.

Could be the timing chain tensioners that are getting worn and doesn't put tension on the chain right away. I have a similar thing, very subtle and only sometimes on the first startup in the morning, then nothing for the rest of the day. For me, I assume it's the oil that runs back down into the pan and needs a couple of seconds to get around on the first startup

I think you may be right on.
