I have to agree with the Gotts Mod. I have not had the chance to do it yet on the Expy, but I know there is absolutely no "cold air intake" kit for my BMW that does not LOSE power somewhere throughout the torque band due to overheated air. From what I've seen so far, the Gotts Mod simulates a ram-air affect. The most affective way to gain power on my car was to remove the secondary carbon filter, delete the silencer, K&N drop in air filter, and add intake scoops that sit directly behind the front grill. All leaving the factory airbox alone. There has been at least a dozen third-party companies who have done testing on these aftermarket intake kits versus a drop-in filter/intake scoops. The results show that the only time an aftermarket intake kit will gain is when the vehicle is dynoed directly after it has been started....no time to warm up. After the engine bay heats up, loss in power every time. Regardless of what car/engine you have (BMW, Ford, Chevy, Ferrari), it is proven time after time that exposed engine bay air filter intakes decrease power at normal operating temps and especially track/performance conditions.

Even though my BMW's high-performance aluminum-magnesium block produces much more heat than my Expo, I don't think I will be feeding any warm air into the 5.4 while I own it. Gotts mod and K&N replacement filter coming soon...

im using a volant cai. im very impressed with it. from the way it looks it would seem to actually keep the intake air cold or outside temp. its completely heat shielded and uses the stock air inlet (drivers side fender). as far as performance is concerned i really dont know as i installed it at the same time as a magnaflow cat back, and a superchips cortex. however i installed the easy lift +3 +2 with 35" cooper discoverer mt's and it still has way more power than stock. i just installed some accell cop's and i do notice a big diffrence in performance and throttle response.

sorry i left out that the volant is all a thick black plastic with a smooth bend. the place that holds the filter is very thick and heat shielded. the biggest downfall of the volant is it takes forever to get it. i ordered mine in jan and diddnt get it till march. i think thats because they had to build it for me. either way its a great product and i cant wait till superchips makes a cai setting for my expy

I did the GOTTS mod today. When I took the snorkel out do I have to replace PVC Pipe or leave as is? Can I add Superchip with this setup?
Thank you for your time!

The snorkel comes out and the PVC replaces it. Is that what you mean? If so yes, that is the Gotts Mod major function.

Yes you can S/C it

Mac Cai intake noise

I've got a MAC Cai on my 5.4, pretty happy with it. Had to cut it shorter when I got it by 1/4", but Mac was also the only company that showed hp and torque specs on my engine. No one else did.

I've had the Mac intake for 8 yrs now and pleased with the extra bump in performance, appearance and sounds great when you get into the gas.
QUESTION: has anyone experienced a loud humming noise at idle (almost like a resonating fog horn) ? I've trimmed about a 1/4" off the pipe to make it flush with the rubber coupler in front off the mass flow sensor and messed around with the sensor itself but it's still humming.. Any suggestions. Also, I'm new to this forum today so if this doesn't post on the main thread can you tell me how to get it there please? thank you..

I want to do the GOTTS mod. Well I guess I did. I just ripped the piece off the end of the filter housing. But I was thinking going a bigger PVC than the 3". Maybe 4" and cut the hole in the fenderwell bigger.

more bang for the buck

Everyone's going GOTTS mod and sounds good too after reading the posts here. I think I should also go for one.

I think what you will find is the same performance of a "CAI" , but with a major financial savings. All the gotts mod or a "CAI" does is increase the air flow to the engine. This shows up as a better throttle response. Next step is to open the tail end of the system by replacing the muffler with one that is less
restrictive. I think you will find the gotts mod supplies more bang for the buck.

Did the Gotts mod this weekend on my 98 EB. The throttle response is better. We shall see how gas mileage goes.

Anyone have before and after mileage readings on cai and the gott mod??

It's all about air flow, not temperature!

Smoothing out the air turbulence before entry into the throttle body, allowing more oxygen to flow into the combustion chamber easier...
More oxygen and more fuel mean more power.

Yes, cold air makes more power because it is more dense with oxygen, but as previous people have mentioned.... The heat of the engine compartment - kills the cold air advantage.

Anyone have before and after mileage readings on cai and the gott mod??

gotts. from about 10-11.5. worth every $15. well then i cleaned some more parts i think im getting closer to 13 now if i drive slow. with this extra power i get about 10. my lead foot i guess.

im thinking about doing a 4" pvc pipe and getting a coupling to match it. idk if itll really increase anything but its worth a try.

Before I had mileage readings but I sold my cai. I think I got 11-12 on it.
