Cold air intake question

hey everybody i have a 2002 expedition and im looking in to buying a cai and was wondering if anyone could chime in and let me know if its worth it i just want to fix it up and have a great looking truck and great engine well thanks all for any help

no. do that gotts mod. it costs about $15. mine works great. i get better mileage and more power. and no loss in power as she heats up. i would only get one if you get a great deal on one from craiglist or ebay something like that. cause they cost upwards of $300. $15 or $300. thats how i looked at it. and the engine bay still looks clean.

I've got K&N CAI kit I like it. Plus the filter has a shiny chrome end. It looks pretty, and I noticed alittle difference. Not sure about that gotts mod seeems everboby likes it .Just not shiny!!!! :p

i agree with panda.... 2 thumbs up for the gotts modd.... def the way to go... plus on intakes the air isnt exactly "cold" if its pulling from ur engine bay is it? plus the filters require being oiled and cleaned and from what i gather alot of people have problems with the oil getting on the mass air flow sensor and messing it up.... i believe the extra performance u are getting from a intake is mainly from opening up the restriction of a air box..... ive had a bunch of vehicles with intakes and i went for the gotts modd instead..... took bout 30 mins and 13 dollars and is totally reversable if u dont like it( doubt that will be the case)..... u also get a roar under hard excelleration like u do from a intake..... this info may not agree with all people, but its just my .02 cents.....;)

thanks for all the info, but what exactly is the gotts mod?? im new to this im tryna gain alot of experience so i can keep my truck in good shape but idk what that is

Yup!!! I'm with yah... I like the "shiny chrome end" and the Chrome tubing I got.. Makes it look cleaner :)

Is cai really colder air?

I understand that colder intake air is better. I also know that the nice shiny aluminum is a great thermal conductor. The engine heat is more easily transferred to the intake air flow with an aluminum tube than say your stock plastic tubing. If you were to paint the tubing with ceramic paint you might be able to reflect some of that heat. However that does away with the shinny part as well. Hard to have your cake and eat it too.

Have you ever seen a test where a CAI product is shown to reduce intake air heat? The science behind it cant stand up to testing. This is why I went with the Gotts Mod for ten bucks and left the shinny marketing thing for someone who wants more show.

Why Google Gott's Mod - why not look on the forum - it's here, and links to it in numerous locations - guys/gals why send people elsewhere? Let's build this forum so people stay put and do not have to hunt and peck for info. There is a thread here Gott's Mod Info (or at least give direct links!)

I've got a MAC Cai on my 5.4, pretty happy with it. Had to cut it shorter when I got it by 1/4", but Mac was also the only company that showed hp and torque specs on my engine. No one else did.

I did the GOTTS mod, no regrets. I'd much rather keep my stock intake and maybe paint it or add some chrome covering to it than to replace it with a $300 aftermarket. I don't like the aftermarkets because they're thin aluminum which very quickly conducts heat from under the hood to heat the air as it's entering the throttle body. The stock thick rubber and plastic is not a good heat conductor, it just doesn't look very nice.

However, there is one advantage the aftermarket setups have that I do like. They have a smoother airflow from the filter to the engine. Usually their pipe has a better shape without bumps and ridges inside them. So although they're heating the air up through the thinner sidewalls, they still flow better.

I can't argue whether or not the air running thru the intake IS actually heated or not, but I have read that some people CLAIM the air runs thru it too fast to be heated up. Again, no rock solid evidence of this. Gotts seems to be the way to go, but that Mac looks pretty nice under the hood.
Mac's was pretty reasonably priced, K&N wanted a lot more, I've heard nothing but excellent comments about Velocity's, (I think that's the name), go whichever route you want, you're not gonna turn it into a rocket with a Cold Air Intake.

The second law of thermodynamics states the the higher the temperature difference between two objects, which is called the Delta temperature, the greater the rate of heat travel.

The rate of air flow has nothing to do with whether the air is heated up or not. The intake air is actually cooling down the intake pipe.
