Coolant leak

God day I have a 2017 Eco boost Expedition with 80k on it. The heater stopped working. Dealer said it was 1 of the 2 turbo cooling lines leaking. $800.00 later it still was loosing fluid (the reservoir would be low). Next they replaced the water pump. A week or two later I smelled coolant inside the passenger compartment but nothing was found. The dealer has had it off and on from Aug 2019 for two weeks at a time. The last time they had if almost a month. They say nothing is wrong. We dont see any coolant anywhere. The dealer say they tested everything including a head test to see if I am loosing a head gasket. Any ideas would be helpful

I recall reading a thread on this forum pertaining to a connection that eventually leaks. I think it's above engine on passenger side. 800.00 to replace turbo coolant line? wtf

I have a 16 with 93k. My heater core was making a gurgling sound behind the dash when starting the engine and I found the coolant to be low. I put in almost a gallon, but show no signs of leaking anywhere. I have just been topping it off with about half a quart once a month when I dump my oil can.

If they are going to simply throw parts at it I would hope they are giving you a deep discount! I take it at 80k it's out of warranty?

Max78, I have an extended warranty up to 140k, but at the time of the turbo line it "was not covered" under what I had. When I went back again a friend that works there talked me into talking with the GM. He up graded my warranty to the "Best they offer" at no charge. This last time when it was in for almost a month the GM gave me a 1k credit and said I might want to take it to another dealer next time.

Having the same issue with 2015 Expedition with 77000 miles .. Dealership has changed several hoses and the water pump. It has been at the dealership for 6 weeks now. It does have a blank screen issue that was caused when they replaced the evaporator under the dash. We are driving a 2019 loaner Expedition now. They have thrown so many parts at it that will be hard to know what fixed the COOLANT LEAK PROBLEM.

It is possible but sure hope not. When i was in the Navy we had hanger queen aircraft that were used for part :)

Williamb97 I sure hope she is not a hanger queen. That did cross my mind. I have also worked around aircraft and I am familiar with the term. This issue started after the dealer worked on the a/c in the front and back. When I picked it up after the front a/c would go on and off at will. a few weeks later the front heater did not work. Thats when they said the turbo cooling line was leaking and then it all started. Thank's for your service.

Sounds like a damaged or rusted through heater core issue, especially if coolant can be smelled inside the cabin.

Also, the fancy Expeditions with rear climate controls apparently have a secondary heater core for the royalty sitting in the back, with secondary coolant lines. It could be leaking from there, if everything up front checks out OK.

Gurgling water sounds coming from the glove box when you start the engine cold means there is air in the system. I had the same thing happen when the water pump on my V8 Triton developed a gasket leak. Pretty soon the slow leak became a full-blown coolant hemorrhage.


Just for fun though, change your radiator cap first. Sometimes that's all there's to it : a rad cap that is damaged and lets coolant leak out when hot, which is very hard to catch "in action". It is recommended to change rad caps multiple times in a car's or truck's lifetime, because they do degrade quite rapidly. They can actually fail in several ways, be it the gaskets or the little spring-loaded plunger mechanism in the center. On my 2014, the original rad cap actually failed BOTH ways : the main gasket cracked and the center plunger was frozen in place due to an accumulation of gunk.


Finally, if you're the one paying for it (as opposed to warranty), the dealership is probably the worst place to go get things fixed.
