Could be someone put stop leak stuff in there.

The reservoir on my '03 was all nasty like that about 10 years ago. Stuck the garden hose down in it and turned the water on full blast and just let it overflow until it cleared out all the whatever it was that was in there. Almost looked like algae. Have you been using just plain water in it?

I’ve been using a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water, and I have a coolant leak so I add a good amount every day, so it shouldn’t be that old…
