2007 Expy EB 5.4 4x4
Last week was driving when the truck started running rough and the check engine light came on. Took it to a local Auto Zone to see what the code came back as. The code read a misfire in cylinder #3.

Took it to the dealer the next day. Dealer calls me the next day and tells me I need a new motor because their is no compression in #3 and #4 and my fuel pump is toast (extremely pissed about the fuel pump because I just replaced it summer of 2010, thinking to myself exgirlfriend may have had a hand in this). Dealer wants 9k to fix everything. I tell him I don't have 9k to put into it. I ask what specifically is wrong with it he tell me they would have to get into to tell me, and it would cost me about $300 to properly diagnose the problem.

Friday I get a call from the dealer stating the the lifter spring in #3 is broken and the exhaust valve in #4 is burnt. I ask if just the head can be replaced and he tells me yes. Cost for the head replacment is $4300k, plus the fuel pump is $1200. Tells me he will give me a break and do all of the work for 5k.

Priced the head at $1500, I know there are some misc parts needed but can't figure out why the cost of replacing a head is so much. Contemplating buying a used motor for the same or less price.

Went to a local shop (non-dealer) and he said he won't touch it because the 5.4 is notorius for problems with the plugs. He couldn't even recommend anyone either. Anyone know of a good shop in Southeastern Michgian that they would recommend?

The dealer probably doesn't want to do the work. The prices for the parts are probably brand new that's why they're so expensive. I know it sounds crazy but you might want to try another Ford dealer.
