The drive shaft is the big tube running from the transmission to the rear end. From there the rear end connects to the wheel end with cv axle shafts - you can't remove the axle shaft from the drive shaft.
If you are wanting to remove the axle shaft from the rear end(differential) you would use the slide hammer and attachment. As a habit I only remove one side at a time, some transaxles may drop the carrier if both are removed. You don't have that problem to worry about.
There have been a few times where a good jerk on the axle shaft has removed it, don't count on it though. I only do that when replacing the assembly since it does a number on them and you risk the boot separating.
