Cylinder 6 Misfire

Last Monday- ‘19 Expy (13K miles) violently shuttered/****** and lost all power after driving 2 miles from a cold start. Flashing check engine light, Towed to dealership

-P300 & P306 codes indicating there was a random misfire & misfire in cylinder 6.

-Dealership moved coil pack to cylinder 4 but could not duplicate the misfire after driving 40 miles.

-Wanted me to p/u vehicle with nothing being done. I don’t feel safe driving the vehicle if it happens again. Told them they needed to figure out what was wrong, and also check out the cold start rattle.

-Dealership confirmed I need the cam phaser replacement, and that this is the cause of the misfire. Parts are on back order until middle of November, and they don’t have a rental for me. Looks like at least 45 days before they will have it back to me.

I know the cam phaser issue has been talked about at length, but did not see anyone with misfire issues. Has anyone experienced this or know about this? I’m just as a loss for what to do. I might be dramatic, but being stranded with my toddler wasn’t pleasant, and if it happens again on the highway or downtown... I just don’t want to be in that position.

I had a bad ignition coil with similar symptoms. It was fine most of the time, but if I went hard on the throttle the whole car shook and the check engine light would flash. It would recover if I let it idle for a minute or restarted the engine. Then it was fine until my next hard acceleration. It could be something as simple as that. Swapping the coil was a good idea. If it happens again, they'll be able to narrow the problem down.

I would research the vehicle lemon law in your state, and if you qualify, proceed with a repurchase (refund) after the dealer keeps your vehicle for 45 days. I would not tell the dealership your intentions.

There is no excuse for a one-year old vehicle to break down, and require a 45 day wait for parts while under warranty (and the dealer not able to provide a rental).

Poor dealer service and marginal quality is why I’d never purchase another new Expedition.
