2007 Lincoln Navigator 160k miles. 105 degrees outside. I'm in the garage grabbing a few things while the car was idling on the driveway. I noticed a tapping sound
Coming from the Nav. It sounded just like a metal object tapping on glass. Like a wedding band or a coin lol. First I thought was the kids trying to grab my attention but it wasn't. It would tap about 5-6 times every other minute. Anyone have a clue what to look for?

Do you have rear air assist suspension? If so, go thru your menu and turn this optional feature off. Does the noise stop? If so, the noise was likely the compressor. If the noise remains, you'll need to determine a ballpark location of the source - under the hood, under the rear, etc.

Watch the AC compressor cycling on and off and see if that is coincident with the tapping sounds, although a full minute between cycles is a long time for the compressor. An even faster check would be to turn off the HVAC system completely and see if the tapping stops.

Yes flexpedtion I do have rear assist suspension. I'll play with that today. Bobmbx it didn't sound like the AC compressor click but I'll check that 2.

Is it not the infamous door blend actuator? It's notoriously easy to fail. Cheap part, easy to replace. It lives right behind the center dash, under the nav unit that's why you're hearing it in that vicinity.

Come to find out the vehicle is overheating now while in idle. going to replace damn near the entire cooling system and see what happens. That noise was definitely coming from the engine. Luckly the head gasket wasn't blown with the wife driving it around . It's parked now until the truckload of parts come in lol. I'm just trying to hold this off till the 2018's come out. Man they're nice.

It might be something as simple as a stuck thermostat or bad water pump.

If you overheat an engine bad enough, your literally seizing the components inside . Pistons seizing to walls of cylinders, main and rod bearings wanting to freeze up, you get the result. On top of coolant overheating, add to the motor being low on oil, it's not pretty. That on/off tapping noise is probably lifters starving and lower end wanting to shut down. Let us know what you find.
