So upon reading previous posts im starting to think my diff motor is going out. At first i thought it was a brake but now i dont know. Please help!! So i have an 03 eb with a 5.4 with 75xxx on it. im the 2nd owner and really dont have any experience with auto 4x, so i didnt think it was an issue with it making a grinding noise when i engage anything when moving. Once in 4hi, 4lo, and auto the sound goes away completely. This is the wierd part it doesnt seem to make any noise until i use the brakes then it sounds like i have a dead piston in my brake. I rebuilt the brake and no improvement.
So when in 4x all tires spin. Everything works. However sometimes i have problems engaging or dis engaging the switch. Does this sound like the diff motor? I really dont want to spend the 150 to have ford diagnose but i will. Thank you in advance for any help.

Hello-I thinnk your talking about the transfercase motor......

The way I found out besides reading up on here was when it actually was stuck in 4Hi/4low, I got underneath it and banged on it with a rubber mallot and that was enough to "jump start it" or made it move into a different mode. Try that first. I'm actually replacing it anyways as it's a common thing and it's only $70 or so bucks
