it seems like there is no 'detent' for me to shut off the dome lights...2001...am i missing something here?

when trailering at night, and tailgating, i'd like to shut the interior lights off.

if the doors are open and key is off they turn off around the 30 min mark,

while driving they stay on?

the control for dash light brightness controls them also with all doors closed, if you turn it all the way till it clicks they come on.

If they do not go off with all doors closed and under way (they should go off regardless after hitting 15mph) try WD-40'ing the door jambs on the doors. Not sure if that is the problem you are describing. I will say if you are worried about the lights draining the battery, I have had them stay on all night before due to bad door sensors and never once had a flat battery, even in the winter.

They don't have the time out drain kill on them? I think the 03EB was like 10 minutes.

1st gen trucks can have some odd electrical issues. I know personally with mine some nights they would shut off after 25-30 minutes and others I would come out the next morning to go to school and they were still lit up. I blame the infamous windshield leak for that one, though it did go away with the WD-40 trick.

I just happened to replace my windshield around the same time.

yeah they have the delay timer and shut off, but when i'm backing down a boat ramp or up my driveway at night i want them off like right now. the owners manual says there is a detent at the bottom of the dial but there isn't...

i'll search for the kill switch suggestion...

thanks guys for all you do...

Ok, I was kind of following along with you until that sentence. ^
Are your interior lights not shutting off when you close your doors, or are you driving around with your doors open (lifting your tailgate)?

This all bring back memories from 20 years ago when my grandfather was trying to hone my lack of driving skills. "Dammit boy, use your mirrors!"

Well what I do if I need to see the boat or sleds or whatever I am backing in at night, is turn the very back light off, there is a black switch on it. Then use the mirrors and a spotter and it all works out.

The detent you are looking for only turns them on, it does not turn them off at any point unless all doors are closed, in which case they should be off by default.

The wiring diagram for my 99 shows a relay for the interior lamps in the central junction box. If you were to add a switch on the switched side of the relay you could kill power to all interior lights.

To kill the interior lights with the tailgate open when parked, I trip the latch "finger" by pushing it with an object like a key. This in turn trips the interior light switch, which is part of the latch. Just have to remember to "open" the latch with the handle before closing the door.
