Hi, I have a 2004 2wd eddie buer with the 5.4l, just trying to figure out if i have the 2v or 3v. How do i tell? Read that if it was built at the winsor plant it was a 2v and mine has the winsor plant tag on the engine. Is this the only way to tell?
Thanks

After 2002 then went to 3v, there maybe some early 2003 with 2v but if your 2004 then 3v.

Ok, thanks. Knew they came out in '04 but didnt know early or late that year.
i was kinda hoping for the 2v because of the spark plug drama, but i guess the 3v is the better engine from what little ive read. Got 211155 on the clock and still going like a top. Love it..

Sorry your right I don`t know why I thought that I know the F-series came out in 2004, cause my dad had a 3v 5.4 But he bought his in 2003 I guess late in 03 or early 2004 models.( guess that`s what made me think 2003) The Expy did not get it till the following year.

I post from home. Like right now. But I do all day long. A lot of time I'm not home. Plus I have unlimited text messaging. I actually have true unlimited data as well. I had it before they started limiting data amounts so I was granfathered in. As long as I keep paying for it, I get it. :waytogo:

Thanks for the info guys. Didnt know about the 3v spiting plugs, i thought 2v's spit and 3v's broke while changing them.

I thought they had corrected the spitting issue by the 03s and 04s, then they switched to the 3V design.

Also, I thought the 3V was an option in 04, along with the 2V. Then they went with only 3V in 05+. Could be wrong though.

Could you tell by the way the throttle is driven? I assume the 3V are electrically driven, where as my 4.6 2V is cable driven. Granted, on my dad's 04 F150 with the 2V 4.6, it's electrically driven. Does anyone with an 04 2V 5.4 have electric throttle?

Ya I thought it was just a torque issue and breaking plugs in 05+ 3v?

A quick check- 2valves have black plastic valve covers, 3 valves are cast aluminum. 05-06 second gen first with 3valve, but I saw somewhere that a few
'04 Expy's slipped through with them. F150's got them first, so that's where there's some confusion.

Ok, I'm new to posting, but I've been a member for a while now. The knowledge of the collective is amazing. Someone always has an answer. It is time for me to thank everyone that has unknowingly assisted me. Here's my issue, I've done a lot of searching and can't figure out if my 2004 EB is a 2V or 3V. Is there a definitive answer to this??? Is the plastic/aluminum valve cover a sure thing???

Here's a Ford VIN decoder link for the 2004 Fords : 2004 Ford VIN Decoder sheet.
Looks like your 8th digit should be an "L" if it's the 2V 5.4L motor. They didn't start putting the 3V into the Expedition till the '05 model year. Ford increased the casting thickness around the sparkplugs starting in the '02 model year, to help prevent sparkplug blowouts.

So, my understanding is that it's best to have a 2004 5.4 due to the "spitting plug" fix and not having the "plug seize" of a 3v. Is that correct?
