I really didn't hear anything in your video. Maybe ask the seller to open the hood and put his phone at various places in the engine compartment.

The 3.5 Ecoboost V-6 uses direct fuel injection. This sprays fuel directly into the cylinders at the top of the compression stroke. This means that the fuel has to be at really high pressure. Most DI engines, including the Ecoboost, have a mechanical high pressure fuel pump to generate the pressure needed to inject fuel into the cylinders. These HPFPs are usually driven by one of the camshafts and they do make a ticking noise while the engine is running. The noise is loud enough that some engines have a chunk of foam covering the HPFP to dampen the noise.

If you are concerned about cam phasers, and you should be, ask the seller to open the hood, put his phone in the engine compartment, and have an assistant start the engine while the engine is cold. If the engine makes a lot of racket for the first few seconds while cold and then quiets down, that may be the cam phasers. You can search YouTube for "Ecoboost V-6 cam phasers" to get an idea of what this sounds like and how long it lasts from the videos.

Have an independent mechanic do a pre-purchase inspection on the Expy if you're serious about it. Specifically the motor and drivetrain, as well as the overall vehicle. It's 8-9 years old, so there's likely to be issues ( rust, electrical, A/C ...), and you don't want to be surprised a month from now. Any service records or Carfax with the Expy?

I hear it as he came around to the RF. See another one on a trailer as well. How do you know that a seller is tapeing the truck he is selling?

If I were here, you would know it !
That video really doesn't prove, or disprove, anything as far as I can tell, especially the (potential) issue you describe, and I certainly would not rely on it by itself to make me wanna buy it, or any other vehicle from that seller...

It's not even up close, the hood, doors & liftgate are not open with interior shots, and lights are not on either....so therefore:

"Be afraid"
"Be VERY afraid" - The Fly :)

As already mentioned, I would have it inspected BEFORE purchasing, by a trusted tech/shop, since the cam phaser issue is fairly common with those eco-boost models, and fairly expensive to fix also...

Good luck either way !

Thanks for the replies. It is at a Chevrolet dealer a few hours from me so I ask them to send me a video of it. This is before they had a chance to detail it or anything. Was curious if it sounded really bad or not before I drove all the way to look at it. From the responses it's nothing terrible. Carfax shows really good/consistant service records at a Ford dealership.

Definitely will have it inspected at a Ford dealership before I purchase it.

I looked on Zeigler's website for an ESP and I can get one with after Ziegler's inspection sheet is filled out by a Ford dealer and signed off on. Planning on having an appointment setup at a Ford dealer before I go down to perform the Zeigler required inspection. If everything passes I will get the ESP. I think it was 48mth, 60K for $2600ish. That was their best ESP offered (over 1000 parts covered). Seems like a good price/investment for peace of mind. I've never dealt with them but from what I have read on hear they are great.

To me, it sounds like a passing vehicle, not the Expedition.
