Driving to work at 4 am this morning, my truck randomly threw the “wrench” icon, lost all power, dropped to idle, and refused to move until I shut it off and back on again. Happened three times in my 12-mile drive to work. Did some stuff at work, drove home, and it happened twice more. Code showed a P2112. Which is basically the actual throttle opening is out-of-spec with what was requested of the TB. Not what I’d call common, but not unheard of either on the EB. Typically appears when towing a trailer, and virtually nonexistent on vehicles not towing.
Returned the PCM to stock, drove around til the wrench came back on (that required 30 miles of driving and playing with throttle position, so clearly my tune played a factor in the wrench appearing), took it to the dealer around 11, and at 1215 left with a new throttle body installed under warranty. Put my tune back on at the dealer and drove all the way home with no issues.
Just a heads-up if any EB owners experience something similar.

Same thing to me. 17,000 miles and happened in middle of 4 way intersection. Pulled over, turned truck off and back on, and it was gone. Took to dealer, got same code you did, replaced in 30 minutes. I’m at 27000 miles now no issues

Mine did the same thing last Friday. It did it twice. Read the same codes. Has not done it since. Maybe I'll give the dealer a call.

I had mine replaced like last September? Its a known issue on the 3.5l EB.
I think there is a TSB, but not a recall on the issue.

Interesting it happened so early in your EB’s life.
I’m just shy of 60K, which has been 25K since I bought it last year. Only work that’s been done on it.
My wife’s is over 80K and still on the original TB. So definitely hit or miss on whether it happens. Ford definitely knows it’s an issue, but I never found a TSB for it. Probably because it’s known, but not guaranteed it’ll fail.
I would have upgraded to the BBK 73mm, but with the probability of zero gains against the $450 price tag I couldn’t justify it.

@DF5.4 if it did it, the code will be in there even if the check engine light isn’t on. I’d take it in for sure. While it seems to be more load-based, worse when towing, if it’s failing, it can become quite the pain if it happens 6 times in less 20 miles like it did to me.

I'm scheduled for Monday morning. Not going to screw around with it. Camping season is almost here.
I have a little over 60K miles on mine.

What year where all of your Expys? 15,16 or 17 ... I know Jski’s is a 16 but not sure on the rest of you all. Just wondering if the 17’s got a fix from factory since Ford is most likely aware that there is a premature failure problem ? Maybe a bad parts vendor?

Every time I’ve seen this issue pop around here or on other forums it’s been on a 15-16.

FYI; In many cases, the TB can be recalibrated. We have a procedure for my SLK which basically includes:

Turn key to first position(may be similar to accessory?), Put gas pedal to floor, turn key to OFF, let pedal off floor. wa la......car is noticeably peppier afterward.

Might be a similar procedure for ours?

You said you are just shy of 60k.
Does this fall under the factory 60k powertrain warranty or did you buy an extended warranty?

Not that is a huge deal as the part is only $120.

There’s a flaw in the plastic gears inside the throttle body motor that causes the issue, so recalibrating it won’t fix it. At least that was my understanding of the issue.

I have no idea to be honest. I have an extended warranty, so it could have been either. Didn’t cost me anything, so I was happy. I didn’t realize the stock one was only $120, I had checked for aftermarket ones and the BBK 73mm was $450.

Our family business buys all Ford F-150 ecoboosts. Regrettably, we have replaced multiple throttle bodies on 3.5L’s.

Do it yourself. It’s a piece of cake.

FYI, I have NOT needed to replace mine on my 2013 King Ranch F-150 with 97,000 miles. I wonder if it’s because I use a “catch can”?

Catch can wouldn’t have anything to do with TB. TB is powertrain related. Maybe you just got lucky!

I see what you’re saying but when I put a Cobra Jet TB on my Shelby the stocker (with 5,500 miles) was coated on the rear side with oil...

I’d say you have gotten lucky as it really seems hit or miss.
My wife has a 15 Expedition as well, but her’s has over 80K and still on the stock throttle body. I expect it to happen sooner or later though.
Having researched further, it seems the gears aren’t the issue, it’s the actual little circuit board in the plastic cover that provides the TPS reading that goes bad. It’s so common that Delphi (who produced the TBs) has actually started just offering the plastic cover with the chip in it to lower warranty replacement costs.

I had the same problem with my 2015 at 64,000 miles. The first time it happened I got a wrench light. I thought the engine failed because I lost power and the engine only idled and sounded like it lost a couple cylinders. I shut it off, turned it back on and everything was normal. I took it to dealer and they could not recover any codes or find anything to indicate a problem. Because of my extended warranty they could not replace the throttle body even though they suspected that's what it was. So I continued to drive it and about a week later it happened again so while the wrench light was on I hooked my scanner up, captured the code, told the dealer the code number, and they replaced it for me.
