Engine problem

So I'm buying a 2000 expedition from my girls mom it's got a 5.4 she is terrible at maintenance but I'm getting it super cheap like scrap price ... I think in my area it's like 200 bucks ... well it's been non operational for some time she said she was driving down the freeway and it made ether a whining or grinding sound then completely shut off any thoughts on what may be the cause

See if you can turn the crank with a socket and breaker bar or jump box and crank it.

Correction it's a 98 still a 5.4 the motor isn't locked up it turns over and even sputters to a start it only ran for a sec or two had to have foot to the floor to start. it sounded terrible but that may be from the oil setteling to the pan I'm getting a code scanner to get codes from it and start from there
