I have a 2001 expedition with the 5.4 and 2wd if that makes any difference. 170k miles when accelerating in the 1000-1800rpm range my Expedition shakes and the engine stumbles until around 2000 rpm than its fine after 2000 rpm. If rpms drop below 2000 rpm than the truck starts doing it all over again. I replaced the fuel filter yesterday and one coil about two months ago and the boot and spring for another coil today. The truck started doing this about a week ago. I have noticed that there is coolant on the outside of the spark plug boots on the number 1 and number 4 cylinders, I have also replaced the head gaskets, intake manifold gaskets, throttle body gasket, new coolant, oil, etc. The previous owner told me that the fuel pump was recently changed but i do not know if that's true. I need this Expedition as its my only vehicle other than my wife's and she needs her all the time for school and work. Please any help would be greatly appreciated. What are the chances that it could just be the coils need to be changed? Maybe fuel pump? oh and when fuel filter was changed the gas that came out was black.

what was the reason that you only changed one coil about two months ago and the boot and spring for another coil today.

Did you change any plugs or when was the last time plugs, coils and boots were changed?

you say you installed a new throttle body gasket. Did you clean the exhaust ports thru the throttle body?

Are you getting a check engine light? if so what codes are coming up?

I changed one coil pack a couple months ago because the truck had a misfire on cyl 1. i moved the coil pack to cylinder 4 and the misfire followed it. i replaced the coil spring and boot today because one of the boots got ripped while i was checking out the spark plugs today and i noticed that the spring was rusty and the new boot came with a spring so i figured should replace the spring while im at it. The spark plugs were changed a couple months ago but with the cheap autozone ones due to not having much money for the good stuff. There are no codes present and no CEL.

I am not sure when the other seven coils or boots were replaced last. I have only owned the truck for 3 and a half months and no i didnt clean the exhaust ports through the intake.

you may want to change plugs and boots and see what happens Go with motorcraft plugs and you can get autolite boots. Also get a tube of dielectric grease and fill the boots and springs with the grease this will help protect the boots and springs.

You may also want to check the trans fluid and change it if needed.

also check for any vacuum leaks by spraying carb cleaner around the vacuum hoses

I was also told something about the intake manifold and the coolant crossover could cause similar problems as well. whats your opinion on this?

Fix the coolant leak. Known problem for shorting the coils to ground. Test and fix one thing at a time. Then you are able to assess the results of the change. Manifold leaks usually show up as lean codes.

Im sorry, its just i really need this fixed.

X2 on fixing the AF leak and COP boot R/R.

You need to use the search function on this board. Chances are your problems are not unique and a solution can be found with a little investigation. Read and learn about your truck so you won't have to sit and stare at a screen waiting for answers.

Does the coolant crossover leak internally or externally? i do not see any leaks anywhere around the intake manifold or coolant cross over. just only see coolant on the boots for the spark plugs. I also do have water coming out from the exhaust during idle but i believe thats normal condensation.

I had my intake manifold replaced at 180,000 miles. The coolant leak was shorting the coil(s). It's expensive, but it's back to the smooth idle I had before. (2001 Ford Expedition 5.4 L)

I should have just replaced the manifold to begin with. I have new plugs, new springs and boots on all the coils, and all the other above stuff i replaced. I took my coolant crossover off and sure enough it was cracked on the plastic manifold. I love this Expy cuz of its towing power but i really wanna sell it right now. I dont like money pits.

Thank you for you reply and the link to your manifold problem. mine is cracked in same areas. Guess its time for a new manifold. I dont want to go used with it since i want it to work right.

Would the all aluminum manifold from a 99 work on the 01? If both have the 5.4

Thanks to all who answered and offered help. I replaced the manifold with one from a Ford E250 with lower mileage and the Expy is back to normal and ready to roll. Runs great now. Thanks again
