Today we attempted to take our 2011 Expedition on it's inaugural camping trip with our new-to-us 2006 KZ Frontier. Unfortunately it was clear right off the bat that something was woefully wrong with our trailer brakes. Here's where it gets complicated -

The brakes react to far strongly and too quickly (dragging tires), and we know we need to adjust our brake controller down. However, the brake controller (Tekonsha Primus) refuses to let us adjust it, either showing a short or displaying random numbers, which eTrailer indicated was a short on the red wire to ground.

Additionally, and very oddly, the engine revs in time with the hazard lights (which we had on due to being stuck in the road unable to drive due to the brakes) ONLY when the trailer is connected. We theorized that this was due to a ground fault in the trailer wiring as well.

The connector cable on the trailer side was damaged with exposed wires, so we removed the damage and spliced it back together. Everything hooked up good but the hazard reving issue still exists, and we still couldn't adjust the brake controller We decided to not attempt to test towing again by pulling the trailer out of our tight parking spot since the issues still existed.

We also have some other weird electrical issues (low beam headlight only getting 6v, not 12v) and wonder if this could be related to a short somewhere in the wiring harness.

Thoughts? It's stumped everybody we have consulted with. Currently we're trying to isolate whether the issue is on the trailer side or tow vehicle side. Has anybody ever heard of engine issues related with hazard lights?

Thanks in advance. Sorry if this is a jumbled and overly wordy post, it's been a long day of trying to go camping and failing!
