I have a 2002 Epxy 5.4. I have a "whine" coming from the engine and can't find where it is coming from. I recently replaced the alternator. I've done the "water test" on the belts (squirting water on the belt) and noise does not stop.

It starts up after the engine is warmed up and stops or decreases when accelerating or cruising.

Thoughts on where to start looking?

Easiest way is to pull serpentine belt, spin pulleys, listen! You'll probably hear one sound crunchy, like an old roller skate. Then fire up engine, listen! Don't run too long, you won't have cooling, or charging. If it's not obvious which one is bad, you can use a mechanics stethoscope or a large screwdriver handle against your ear. Place blade towards affected pulleys or parts. I don't need to tell you be careful around a running engine. Keep us posted.

I Just rembered something else to check, sometimes an automatic transmission will cause the whine your talking about. A bad pump or bushing can cause a whine. Check your trans fluid, make sure level is correct warm, and not burnt, pull stick and smell it. Good luck.

FYI - I did fix it. It was the idler pulley. But, my manual and sticker on the side door say I have a 2002. I had to get a 2001 pulley. Both Auto Zone and Pep Boys pulled on that was 12mm wide. The one I needed was 14mm wide. Pep Boys was kind enough to look under 2001 just to look. The one I got was actually 15mm wide, but same diameter.

Squeal is gone - so far.

That is what I went outside and did while waiting for a possible reply. Thank you!! The old pulley did sound like the old roller-skate! New one no noise at all, so I really think I did figure it out. Thank YOU again.
