Equipment Recall 24S45 - Advance Notice - 2018-2021 Expedition-Navigator - Service Part EPSAS ...jpg

If your vehicle has received a Dealer-installed or Dealer Parts-Counter-sold EPAS steering gear replacement, and your vehicle has exhibited the above-described steering wheel behavior, it would be prudent to contact your Dealer and ask them to contact the SPECIAL SERVICE SUPPORT CENTER (SSSC) for direction toward repairing your vehicle.

We got our recall letter last week--right before going on vacation. We're back now having experienced occasional odd oscillations in the steering wheel on occasion, like when the camera senses you're going over the line, but we were dead-center in our lane. I will definitely schedule an appointment as I have never been 100% satisfied with steering effort/feel compared to older vehicles with EPAS, so we'll see.

So, if you have the factory installed part you aren't affected, but if you had/did a repair/replacement of this part then you are affected?

Does anyone have an update on the estimated time for this EPAS recall remedy to come out as Ford Pass is still saying end of November 2024? With only 24,000 miles on our 2021 we hate to get rid of it but the steering is all over the place. Contemplating getting into a '24 but afraid we will have the same issue.

Ford has not released a Full Dealer Bulletin for Equipment Recall 24S45, so the hoped-for November 2024 software update in Supplement #1 is presently their latest estimate.

If your vehicle's steering behavior presents "Unintended steering assist can lead to loss of vehicle control while driving, increasing the risk of a crash" -- as the Owner Letter describes -- you may want to have your Dealer confirm your vehicle's steering performance issue, and then ask them to seek authorization to provide you a rental vehicle, pending the availability of the EPAS software update.

Your request and the Dealership's inquiry may (at least) yield feedback on how close Ford is to releasing the updated software.

Good luck!

Ford has issued the Equipment Recall 24S45 Full Dealer Letter, authorizing dealers to fulfill this Field Service Action (FSA) by reprogramming affected vehicles' Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) with software that is now available...

The Workshop Manual offers these descriptions of the Power Steering Control Module...

EPAS Steering Gear
The EPAS gear is an assembly consisting of a PSCM , a motor, and a steering torque sensor, all of which are serviced as an assembly. The inner and outer tie rods and the steering gear bellows boots are available separately for service.
  • The steering torque sensor is mounted near the input shaft of the EPAS gear and is used by the PSCM to determine how much force is being used to turn the steering wheel.
  • The EPAS gear has one inner tie rod located at each end of the gear assembly.
  • The EPAS gear has one outer tie rod located at each end of the gear assembly.
  • The EPAS gear has one bellows boot located at each side of the EPAS gear assembly. Each boot is held in place with 2 boot clamps.
PSCM
The PSCM is the ECU for the EPAS system. The module monitors all sensor inputs and HS-CAN2 messages relating to the EPAS system and directly controls the output of the EPAS motor.

Sample notification letters for affected Ford and Lincoln vehicle owners are attached below as PDF documents...
